Survey Thursday – The Story Behind Your Nickname?

April 30, 2009

* What’s the story behind your online name?

Creating an online persona is fun for many of us and our online “name” is just one part of that fun. Some of us use our real name as part of our “handle” or screen name (e.g. frankie, Kel. Sr., rayboyjr.), while others go with something totally off-da-wall (e.g. MoOgooGuypAN, BananaFysh, S Ticket). This blog is meant to uncover the mystery that is your name, while giving you a chance to share a little more about yourself to the WWE `ohana. And no worries, even if your name is pretty straight forward (e.g. NeedaHobby, HNL2LAS, hemajang) we wanna know the real meaning and why it’s significant to you. Dig down deep folks. 🙂

Speaking of hemajang, he recently asked this question to me:

The big question for me is…how come WWE when most of your posts are local specific?

Which prompted me to dig this one out of the idea box and post it! So here we are. Check out the meaning behind my name below and den post yours k? Shoots!

World Wide Ed was actually a nickname I had back at UH (that, and sedward, the UH email account name I had at the time). I was a columnist for the Ka Leo O Hawaii student newspaper and wrote a column under the same banner (World Wide Ed), for its similarity to the phrase World Wide Web, a topic in which I covered. That’s pretty much it. Kinda boring, but I’m sure the stories behind your names will be much more interesting. Share share!

P.S. To make things even more interesting, try and take a stab at guessing the meaning behind someone else’s name too. *grin* Or what about explaining your “other” nickname(s)?

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – April 29, 2009

April 29, 2009

Supah big mahalos to all of you for your kind words on yesterday’s bloggy blog and for telling me that WIH was one of your favorite blogs. To show my appreciation, I will special post your favorite Where In Hawaii blog on this non-Wednesday. Oh, it’s Wednesday? Oops. At least the thought was there right? 😉

Last week, getITon got the place correct, but the dish incorrect. But since this is WHERE in Hawaii (and not WHAT in Hawaii like NeedaHobby suggested) (let’s)getITon is da big winnah! Congrats yo!!

If any of you know anything about me, this one will probably be pretty easy, as I go here often. That’s all I’m-a-gonna say. Ack, I said too much. Go!

Happy Birthday to WWE-eeeeee!

April 28, 2009

A year ago to the day, the world was fortunately unfortunately exposed to the mind of me, and I hereby apologize.

You see, the peeps at the ’tiser opened thangs up for me in the backend *snicker* and shortly thereafter, the first ever World Wide Ed blog (to the Advertiser community) – simply entitled “Aloooooha!” – was born (in the USA)!

Things were slow at first, as I tried to find my place amongst the big dogs *woof WOOF* like Stephen Tsai’s “The Warrior Beat,” and Catherine Toth’s “The Daily Dish,” but eventually, I found my virtual footing and carved a cozy little niche out for myself and you fun, faithful readers.

Hoooo! I can’t believe it’s already been a year! *wipes away Visine induced tears* As some of you mentioned in yesterday’s blog, time really does fly when you’re having fun eh? It still amazes me that there were THAT many topics to write about on the daily. Sure, I did miss a few days here and thurr due to travel, holidays, and a little thing called a wedding, but for the most part, I was pretty on top of it wouldn’t ya say?

In fact, if my math is correct (and don’t truss’ me ’cause I suck at math), I probably wrote about 261 posts, give or take a few.

365 (days in the year)
– 104 (weekend days)
—————————————–
= 261 actual week days of possible WWE blogs

OK, I checked out our backend *snicker* and saw that I actually posted 200 fitty blogs! (I tol’ you my math sucks!) Either way, I think that’s quite a feat if I do say so myself. *bends over and waits for a pat on the back* (*snicker*) In theory, if I continue this blog on that torrid pace for the next 30 years of my life, I would’ve bored you to tears with 7,500 posts! Seventy five HUNNY!

Scurred?

Don’t be.

It’ll be all good in the ‘hood going forward. Trust.

I think I’m finally getting the hang of this. No more posts about nails, my broken mandible or MMA. I heard you (or rather, I didn’t hear you at all in the comments) loud and clear. Jeez, and it only took me a year to finally get it! Ha!

Mahalos to each and errry one of you for reading. E Komo Mai to those coming by way of seeing my spooky face in today’s paper. Whether you’re new and this is your first hit of WWE, or you need to be sent to WWEA pretty soon, I send mad love to you! Please continue to read and post your feedback in the comment area. That’s really what keeps me going. I love reading and interacting with the `ohana we got goin’ on here. You guys are the ones who make this blog fun for me! Keep it up yo!

Talk to me (Help a brutha improve WWE)!

* Hints for future posts? – Yes please. 8)

* Some of your favorite WWE memories/highlights of the last year? – the appearance and disappearance and reappearance of Chicken Grease (he was actually my first ever commenter, and it was a positive one at that. In fact, it was so good that it jump started my drive to make this place good), giving away free movie passes to readers like JMAW, Miss Priss, and liane, talking high school supremacy shmack with frankie, celebrating the Phillies’ World Series victory with uncle jimmy, starting and growing the Where in Hawaii series (and being flattered by a few copycats 8) ), scratching my head at Helen‘s ridiculous comments, the funny wedding jokes and videos like the Best Man Blunder Video, making up nicknames for all of you, the thank yous for my periodic PSA posts, the turning point from single digit daily comment counts to double digit daily comment counts (woo hoo!), assigning roles (hunter, chef, law enforcement, etc.) on our desert island, the birth of Scott‘s boy, standing up to tita leerz (and getting pwned! in the process), brightening the start of your work week with Fun Day Mondays, getting my blogs hijacked for totally unrelated topics 😛 , the moderation bot’s strange rules/flags, kuya.d‘s successful “Prom Songs” guest post, the “Good Morning”‘s from M, the lowdown from the female perspective from snow, NeedaHobby, skycastles, kako_mochi, kate, YN and mcat, the sage lecturing advice from hemajang, MakiSushi, Coconut Willy, Kage and Kel Sr. (and jr.), the humor of Ynaku, bB, and rayboyjr, the periodic appearances of Dave, Syxx, BananaFysh, S Ticket, che, zzzzzz, Lose Money, soogs, miLL-viLLe, EMM386, HNL2LAS, Paco, Takeshi, MoOgooGuypAN, L, and Bre, being the first ’tiser blogger to break the Susan Boyle story, collecting names for our future WWE Fantasy Football league, seeing new faces come out of lurk mode, learning what VHO7V meant, and much more! Keep the memories a-comin’!

* What’s the biggest thing that happened to you in the last year? – Hands down, da big dance, fo shizzle.

* What do you hope to do in the next year? – Plan and take an RV trip, interview more Hawaii celebs (BJ Penn, Shane Victorino, Colbie Caillat, holla atcho boy!), etc.

Thanks again for sticking with me for the last year. Here’s to another 7,250 or so y’all (yeah, I used a calculator for that one… whut!?)! Hehe, Shooooots!

Spam Jam Thank You Ma’am!

April 27, 2009

This past Saturday, April 25th, 2009, Hormel Foods Corporation and the SJ Foundation held their 7th annual Waikiki Spam Jam festival in the streets of Waiks. Part of Kalakaua Avenue was closed off for the event (apologies to the uninformed drivers at the time! 😛 ), which ran from 4PM-10PM.

There were an estimated 20,000-25,000 in attendance last year, and this year seemed no different. The street was jam-packed with thousands of tourists and locals alike, enjoying Spam-inspired dishes from the following vendors:

  • Aloha Table at Waikiki – SPAM® Cabbage and Garlic Spaghettine, Loco Moco with SPAM®
  • Cheeseburger Beachwalk – BBQ SPAM® Babies with Pineapple
  • Chibo Okonomiyaki – Okonamiyaki and Yaki Soba w/ SPAM® & Vegetables
  • Coconut Willy’s – SPAM® w/noodles
  • Doraku Sushi – Spam Musubi
  • Duke’s Canoe Club / Hula Grill – SPAM® Fried Rice
  • Gordon Biersch – Guava Mango BBQ SPAM® Sliders, Shichimi Spiced SPAM® Wrap, SPAM® Noodles and Crispy Spam Gau Gee
  • Jimmy Buffett’s – SPAM® Nachos
  • K’s Restaurant – SPAM® Katsu, SPAM® Gau Gee
  • Murphy’s Bar & Grill – Corned Beef Hash with SPAM®
  • PF Chang’s – SPAM® Lettuce Wraps
  • The Shack Waikiki – Spam Burgers and Spam Fries

Two stages were set up (one for KCCN FM 100 and one for Hawaiian KINE), which featured local, Hawaiian acts like Ilona (Irvine), Kawaianuhealehua, Herb Ohta., Jr., Pilioha, Kuhai Halau O Kahalepuna Pa Olapa Kahiko, Typical Youth, Kaukahi, Beach 5, John Cruz, and Kapena.

Almost seven million cans of SPAM® products are eaten every year in Hawaii. That’s more SPAM® per person in Hawaii than in any other state in the United States! So it only seems fitting that the festival be here. Oceanic Time Warner Cable was one of the proud sponsors of this event, that also helped benefit the Hawaii Foodbank by way of canned good donations.

Fave Five Friday – Drinks

April 24, 2009

Buy me drinky drinky?

I could’ve sworn we covered this topic already in a previous Fave Five list, but looking back at the archives, I don’t see it, so hurr we goooo!

Personally, I’m-a-gonna have to make separate lists ’cause my favorite drinks differ based on when and where I yam. OK, let’s do this!

At the crib:

  1. Water – We filter ours using one of dem Brita water pitchers from Costco. Now that’s what I call high quality H2O. 😉
  2. Apple Juice – Those 1 gallon, two-packs, again purchased from Costco. YUM!
  3. Vitamin Water – We used to tank these often, but it got expensive real quick. Speaking of which, aren’t their new commercials just hilarious! They even have a fake microsite! Classic!
  4. Calpico – Pops won a whole case in a golf tourney so wifey and I took a bunch home with us. The Aloe flavored one is not as bad as it sounds and is actually pretty good, FYI.
  5. Primo – She go with poke right after work!

In the Club:

  1. (Almost) Anything on draught – Can’t go wrong with the stuffs straight from the tap
  2. Heiney – I used to like it better when I was the only one in the club green bottling. Now, errone is doing it which kinda sucks. 😦 Gotta switch it up now. Good thing I hardly go clubbing anymore. Ha!
  3. Orange Juice – when I don’t feel like boozing it up, I go O.J. Figgah it’s cheap and somewhat healthy (good way to get my Vitamin C).
  4. Jack and Coke – anything with Coke is a go.
  5. Bud Light – tastes like water, but when there’s nothing else… Can’t forget to send a shout out to Corona for nostalgia’s sake. Makes me remember back to a time when drinking it with the lime wedge at the old Oceans on Thursday nights was cool. LOL!

Dining Out:

  1. Water (with a straw) 😛 – sometimes the taps/pitchers/cups at the joints I go to are questionable.
  2. Coke (with a straw) 8) – I usually get this when I go to the places above. Figgah, they can’t contaminate the Coke dispenser too can they? Hehe! Coke goes well with burger and fry kine places no?
  3. Asahi – any time I go to a Japanese restaurant, this is a guaranz ballbaranz! Just goes with the food. Oh, and green tea too.
  4. Authentic-tasting Nippon Green Tea – see above
  5. When in Rome… – I like to change the brand of beer I drink, depending on where I am. Tsingtao at Chinese restaurants, Corona at Mexican restaurants, Singha at Thai restaurants, Moretti at Italian restaurants, etc.

Sum’more:

  1. Pocari Sweat – drink of choice when walking/running around the muthaland.
  2. Anything Hawaiian Sun – pretty much everything in their lineup is onos.
  3. Ito En Natural Fruit Teas – Mmmm, but kinda expensive at Stan Sheriff! 😦

So what say you? Post your list(s) below a-ight? Happy VHO7V Friday folks! Be safe and have a nice, fun weekend k? Shoots!

P.S. Any kiddies out dea reading… remember… no drink until you stay of age k? 8)
P.P.S. Any social drinkers out dea reading… remember… drink responsibly… no drink and drive k?

Survey Thursday – Do You Facebook?

April 23, 2009

* Do you Facebook? If not where do you call (social networking) “home”?

Lately, the old older peeps here at work have been asking me about this strange new thing called “Facebook.” As the resident “Web Expert” I guess I’m the go to guy for these types of questions and boy, have they been a-comin’! First I smirk (at how late they are to the party) and then I proceed to explain to these newbies what it’s all about. How you use it, why people use it, privacy concerns, etc. The look on their face is priceless. It’s the same as that of someone who just watched TV in color for the first time. (at least I think that’s what they looked like. 😛 )

Facebook, at least to me, is where it’s at. There are so many features to control privacy, friends, microblogging/notifications (ala Twitter), and, as evident by the interest from the old older peeps here at work, it’s catching wind. I’ve gotten back in touch from old friends from yesteryear that I haven’t spoken to in years, and all the company and corporate peers are there as well! There are so many more relevant people up in thurr than say a MySpace. If I had to compare the two, I’d tell someone that MySpace is more for kids and ‘tweens and Facebook is more for adults. (No, not that kind of “adult” you perv. 😉 )

There is a downside though. With so many of your professional contacts up in the heezy, you really have to watch what you say and post. It’s not like I have anything to hide really, but posting that drunken party pic from the weekend (I don’t do this – just an example) is probably not something for your boss’ eyes. I’ve heard of stories of those kinda things coming back to haunt employees, and that doesn’t really surprise me.

How did we get to this point? I remember the good ol’ days when these social networking type sites were strictly for us “young” peeps? Let’s turn back the clock a bit shall we… Remember these?

Chat/Talk on UH’s Unix system –> HCU –> Asian Avenue –> IM/Messenger type services (AIM/Windows Live/Yahoo!/Google Talk) –> Friendster –> LinkedIn –> MySpace –> Facebook

Oh YEAH! I bet ya forgot about some of those gems eh? Ha!

And that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what other sites are out there (Yelp, Flickr, Twitter, Bebo, Hi5, YouTube, and yes, we even have one on AroundHawaii.com).

Is there something after Facebook? Probably, but for now, this is where the party’s at yo. Holla if ya hear me! 😉

Talk to me!
* Do you Yahoo! Facebook?
* If so, how many friends ya got?
* Do you add anyone or just the people you know IRL?
* Are your bosses or company’s executives on there too?
* What’s your favorite part about Facebook?
* Your least favorite?
* What other social networking sites do you frequent?
* If you’ve never joined Facebook or any other social networking site, why or why not?

Possible Hijacking Topics 😛
* American Idol dish
* Hell’s Kitchen dish
* The Office dish
* Survivor: Tocantins dish
* CSI dish
* Grey’s Anatomy dish
* Harper’s Island dish
* Southland dish
* Dancing With the Stars dish

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – April 22, 2009

April 22, 2009

Kage‘s peepers were the sharpest last week with the very specific “Corner of Kapiolani and McCully. Its that small park across the 7-11” guess! Please help me congratulate Kags.

Holding Hands

April 21, 2009

Recently, a friend of mine broke the awkward barrier and held hands with a mutual friend, and it made me think back to that first hand holding moment. The uneasiness right before, the feeling of nervousness during, and the “what the heck were we waiting for?” sensation from there going forward.

Boys and girls are odd creatures, and we’re all at fault. We play the game of: I’m not interested, ok maybe a little, but not too much, but maybe I should show a bit more. It’s a back and forth chess match until, finally, one side says “screw this, I’m going in for the kill!” And more than likely, it’s the boy that has to take action ain’t it?

Why is that?

My theory is that you women don’t want to come off as “easy” or the aggressor. True?

And what’s up with the chicken boys who never make the moves? I still blame it on the girl. That’s right! They don’t drop da hints enough or give the right signs for us tigers to be able to pounce. LOL!

And then there’s the opposite side of the spectrum. The flirty broads or the playa-wannabe donkeys who hold hands with just about anyone and everyone they can get their grubby paws on. They don’t even wait for da signs and just chanceum! Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Not even sure which is worse. :

So what’s the moral of the story?

Shy ladies (hAAaaaaay!), if you want us boys to hold your hands, hollla.
Shy fellas (ho ho!), if you want to hold a girl’s hand, wait for a sign and just do it.
Flirty broads and playa-wannabes, no comment.

To my friends, who are the subject of this blog, I hope you’re not reading this and if you are, peace on earth, and good will to all. 😛

Talk to me!
* Did this blog make any sense whatsoever? Ahahaha!
* How was your first hand holding experience? And second? And third? And fourth? 😉
* If you are a girl, do you wait for the guy to make the first move? Even if you REALLY like him?
* What kind of hints do you send to show him you’re interested?
* If you’re a guy, at what point do you make a move? Is it a feeling you have or do you need to see some signs first?
* How do you show that you’re interested in her?
* Susan Boyle who? Check out the newest Britain’s Got Talent sensation: 12 year old Shaheen Jafargholi!

Fun Day Monday: A.D.D.

April 20, 2009

If my spidey senses are as strong as I think, most of us up in hurr are hovering around my age (young! 😉 ) or older… Which means that we can more than likely relate to today’s topic on A.D.D. Here’s a fun one I recently received. Meetcha at the jump.

A.A.A.D.D. KNOW THE SYMPTOMS…..
Thank goodness there’s a name for this disorder. Somehow I feel better, even though I have it!!

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. (Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder).

This is how it manifests:

I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway,
I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I start toward the garage,
I notice mail on the porch table that
I brought up from the mail box earlier.

I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys on the table,
put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table,
and notice that the can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back
on the table and take out the garbage first.

But then I think,
since I’m going to be near the mailbox
when I take out the garbage anyway,
I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my check book off the table,
and see that there is only one check left.

My extra checks are in my desk in the study,
so I go inside the house to my desk where
I find the can of soda I’d been drinking.

I’m going to look for my checks,
but first I need to push the soda aside
so that I don’t accidentally knock it over.

The soda is getting warm,
and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the soda,
a vase of flowers on the counter
catches my eye – they need water.

I put the soda on the counter and
discover my reading glasses that
I’ve been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk,
but first I’m going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter,
fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote.
Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we watch TV,
I’ll be looking for the remote,
but I won’t remember that it’s on the kitchen table,
so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs,
but first I’ll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers,
but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I set the remote back on the table,
get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then, I head down the hall trying to
remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:
the car isn’t washed
the bills aren’t paid
there is a warm can of soda sitting on the counter
the flowers don’t have enough water ,
there is still only 1 check in my check book,
I can’t find the remote,
I can’t find my glasses,
and I don’t remember what I did with the car keys.
Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today,
I’m really baffled because I know I was busy all day,
and I’m really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem,
and I’ll try to get some help for it,
but first I’ll check my e-mail….

Don’t laugh — if this isn’t you yet, your day is coming!!

Talk to me!
* Does this sound familiar?
* Any of the above happen to you?
* Any other A.D.D. moments ya wanna share with the gang?
* What one activity can actually keep your attention?
* Do you think this has anything to do with sex (Male or Female, not the activity you perv 😛 )?

I hate when I tell  myself I have to remember something, and not 1 minute later I already forgot what I was supposed to remember! LOL! Yeah, nothing to do with A.D.D. really but kinda funny nonetheless eh? Share your stories yo!

Happy Monday! Hope this helps get you through your week! 🙂
