Fave Five Friday – Peeps (Desert Island edition)

February 27, 2009

A-ight gang, unless you can think of anything else, I think we’ve exhausted all our options for da Desert Island. We’ve brought along enough DVDs, CDs, Books, and Valued Possessions to cover half the island. And, thankfully, we’re stranded with each other, so, in case we’re short on any one item, we’ve got each other’s back. Teamwork baby!

Next week (starting this Sunday actually), I’m thinking of starting a new “_____ Friday” game. Oh, it’s gonna be a doozy. Be sure to pick up this Sunday’s Advertiser, get scared by my picture on the left hand column, and then log into this hurr blog to find out what it is yo!

Until then, let’s get back to Desert Island for one final hurrah. “Peeps” is the topic of choice this week and the limit is 5. Peeps, meaning people… dead or alive, famous or not. Remember, these are people you’d want to spend the last 100 75 50 years of your life (some of us are old) on a desolate island in the middle of nowhere. OKGO!

  1. Wifey – [insert obligatory “awwwwww” here] Honestly, if I nevah put this, you guys (and she) would’ve scolded me! But seriously, the island won’t be the same without her. Awwwww. 🙂
  2. MacGyver – Oh yeah! I’m a genius (again!)! We’d be off the island in like half an hour after he fashions a boat for us from leaves and rubble.
  3. BJ Penn – bruddah can teach me all of his sick moves every day, all day. Plus, he would kick anybody’s gluteus maximus who tries to step to us… unless he/she/it was covered in Vaseline! 8)
  4. All you WWE readers – [insert another awwwwww here]. 😛
  5. That genie from last week – If any of the above fail me, I’ll have three more wishes to choose from, though I’d only need one: get off the !$%^ island! 🙂

Talk to me!
* Who you goin’ bring?
* If you have any suggestions for future Desert Island items/topics, post um below!
* Got a guess to what the new “_____ Friday” is gonna be? Holla!
* You goin’ support the papah and pick up this Sunday’s edition? Bonus: get me! 😛

Have a happy Aloha Friday (and weekend) y’all! Shoots!

Survey Thursday – What Is Your Current Ringtone?

February 26, 2009

* On your mobile phone, what do you use as your default ring tone?

(Mahalos to soogs for suggesting this one.)

My default ring tone is set to “Ringtone 10” on my LG Voyager because it’s loud, catchy and unique. Loud because I’m deaf, catchy so I don’t get irritated at it whenever it rings, and unique so I no get confused when somebody else’s phone stay ringing.

The real ringtone I wanna talk about however, is the one I have set when one of my high school boys calls me: “Nuthin’ But a G Thang“! Ohhhhh snap! Makes me laugh every time! HA! (link is NSFW BTW). The sad part is I know all the lyrics by heart. LOL!

Another ringtone that makes me crack up is the one Michael Scott (Steve Carell) uses on his phone on the show The Office: My Humps from the Black Eyed Peas.

So what’s yours? No be shame? Can’t be any worse than those two above! Or can it? Spill the beans! 🙂

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – February 25, 2009

February 25, 2009

Representin’ da Big Isle, FBI style, Ynaku brought home his first medal for WIH, correctly guessing Shokudo last week. And supposedly no moa even honey toast on da Big Island! Pretty impressive Naks. Oh yeah, and big ups to b. for going against the grain and mentioning Kit N Kitchen, another place that serves honey toast. Please help me congratulate them both y’all!

I’m thinking that this week’s one may be a lil’ trickay… (tricky) tricky (tricky) tricky! But hopefully, my hint may help… Guess away young Jedis! 🙂

News Day Tuesday: LeBron James Goes Off

February 24, 2009

(continuing my whining from yesterday’s post… Can we please sign BronBron to next season’s UH squad?

Last Friday, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James went nuts on the Milwaukee Bucks early in the 3rd quarter as he lit up Richard Jefferson and his teammates for 16 points in less than 3 minutes of action. Read an excerpt from the NBA.com recap and then check out the insane YouTube clip below.

[From nba.com]

MILWAUKEE(AP) LeBron James heaved a 33-foot shot through the net to beat the buzzer and headed into halftime with 25 points under his belt.

Turns out, he was just getting warmed up.

James erased the Cleveland Cavaliers’ halftime deficit by scoring 16 points in less than three minutes to begin the third quarter, on his way to 55 for the night – one shy of his career high – in a 111-103 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.

“Just got in the zone, man,” James said. “I saw a few go down, so I just kept going at it, man. Every shot that I made tonight, every shot that we all made tonight, we needed.”

James’ big night included his remarkable run in the first 2:50 of the third quarter, almost single-handedly turning a six-point halftime deficit into an eight-point Cavaliers lead. And he could have scored two more in that stretch if he hadn’t missed a pair of free throws.

“It was almost like watching a video game,” Zydrunas Ilgauskas said…

Video game is right Big Z. That was some sick Double Dribble/NBA Jam-like action there. Oh yeah! Remember those classics? 🙂 Check out the video proof:

Talk to me!
* What did you think of the video?
* Can you believe he’s just 24 years old?
* Isn’t life unfair? 😛
* Are you a LeBron fan?
* Cleveland Cavaliers fan?
* An NBA fan?
* Basketball fan in general? 😉
* Have you ever gotten on a roll (adrenaline rush) like this, making you do the almost impossible? Share with your `ohana please. 🙂

Happy Tuesday y’all!

Why ‘Bows Whyyyyy?

February 23, 2009

It has definitely been a trying year for us Rainbow Men’s Basketball fans this season. The team has shown flashes of brilliance and then lets us down with un-awe inspiring heart break. We’ve hit the lowest of lows and the highest of highs (ok, not really that high). Saturday night’s 76-70 loss against non-conference UC Irvine – who was 9-17 coming into the game – was no different.

After what looked to be another disappointing loss, trailing by 20 points, the ‘Bows made a charge in the second half and made things interesting, bringing it back to within 1 with less that 2 minutes remaining. Late in the game, Lasha Parghalava did the improbable and made a critical turnover… AGAIN, and, the Anteaters were able to preserve their lead, going on to win by 6, 76-70. *sigh*

Some bright spots were Kareem Nitoto’s clutch shooting, and Bill Amis’ and Roderick Flemings’ never say die attitudes towards the end of the game.

Roderick Flemings clutch at the line down the stretch
Roderick Flemings clutch at the line down the stretch

My ideal starting 5:

C – Bill Amis – solid, good defense and rebounding, and can score.
PF – Brandon Adams – big body, hustles.
SF – Adhar Mayen – quick, underestimated shooter. I want to see him get more playing time. He deserves it.
SG – Roderick Flemings – no words necessary. He NEEDS to start. Aside from his offensive skills, he’s probably the team’s best/most aggressive rebounder right now.
PG – Kareem Nitoto – Was very anti-Nitoto last year, but this year, I’m a born again Nitoto fan. He has really developed his game and doesn’t make very many mistakes anymore. Quick, good defense, good ball control and is starting to shoot the lights out!

Some of the others:

PF – Petras Balocka – when Adams needs a break, Balocka would be a decent replacement. His defense is suspect, and his attitude needs to be checked at the door, but he’s a big body who can rebound and score inside.
C – Paul Campbell – I love his hustle and passion for the game, but he needs to work on cutting down his mental mistakes. He’s good for replacement minutes at the 5 as he’s a rebounding and blocking beast.
PG – Leroy Lutu – I’m becoming a fan of this guy. Very confident, smooth, and doesn’t make very many mistakes. Doesn’t act/play like a reserve player. Seems very comfortable out there. Would like to see what kind of offense he can produce.
PG – Hiram Thompson – Prior to the season, I was most excited about the prospect of this guy (other than Flemings). He’s been making too many turnovers, trying to make fancy passes, that I’ve unfortunately soured on him this season.
SG – Lasha Parghalava – Probably one of their better three point threats, but his play in crunch time is one I’d rather not see/experience anymore. I’d play him early and not late.

Somewhat interested to see what Adam Jespersen, Conrad Fitzgerald (former team slam dunk champ) and Hawaii’s own Beau Albrechtson (Kaimuki H.S.) would/could do with increased minutes.

Talk to me!
* What do you think of my starting 5?
* Disagree? Who’s yours?
* What about my player notes? Right on or off base?
* What would you like to see happen next year?

P.S. For those who went to the game, did you enjoy the Oceanic bag giveaway? 8)

Have a good week y’all!

Fave Five Friday – Must Have Possessions (Desert Island edition)

February 20, 2009

Y’all already shared your list of DVDs, CDs and Books. But let’s just say that that there are no TVs, DVD players, CD players and books allowed on this island. You know, hypothetically. 😉 Having said that, what prized possessions would you want with you in this time of need? Remember, these are your top 5 must-haves!

Here’s mine… No bite k?

  1. Cell phone (with unlimited battery power) – Awwww yeah! I’m a genius! My stay on desert island won’t even be that long with 911 at my disposal from my trusty cell. And, if my stay does last a bit, at least I’ll have access to my email, the web, and some games l’dat.
  2. Unlimited supply of water – if Man vs. Wild has taught me anything, it’s that I need water. Forget that drinking your own pee “bidness”… yuck! It’s high quality H20 for me!
  3. ATV/Dune buggy (with unlimited gas) – can be both practical (traveling around the island, fetching food, etc.) and used for fun (jumping off hills, etc.).
  4. Gun (with unlimited ammo) – I’ll be the head cheese with this puppy. Go ahead, make my day.
  5. Genie bottle – In case any of the above fail me, I’ll have three more wishes to choose from. *grin*

Have a happy Aloha Friday (and weekend) y’all! Shoots!

Survey Thursday – Are You a Fan of UH Men’s Basketball?

February 19, 2009

* Are you a fan of the University of Hawaii Men’s Basketball program? More importantly, are you going to the game this Saturday?

I know, I know. It’s hard to be one after a gut-wrenching loss to Nevada last Saturday at home (*crossing my fingers for their nationally televised matchup against Fresno State today*)… but now, there’s more reason to come support the ‘Bows this Saturday at 7:05PM at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Not only is it the second to the last home game for the season (wipe back those tears!), it is the big Oceanic Time Warner Cable sponsored game! *grin* The first 1,000 fans through the gates gets a blue, eco-friendly Oceanic/ESPNU/Food Network/HGTV bag… great for grocery shopping! Check-check-check it out!

Get your eco-friendly Oceanic Time Warner Cable bag at this Saturday's game!

Yeah, shmall kine advertisement, but come support your ‘Bows nonetheless man. They need it!

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – February 18, 2009

February 18, 2009

It took y’all a while, but after a small hint, Paco was able to capture his 3rd belt in 5 weeks, after correctly naming Mililani Restaurant in last week‘s Where In Hawaii contest. Please help me congratulate Pacs!

This week’s one may seem rather obvious, but I know of several local eateries who serve this for dessert. Could it be any of those? *grin*

Creating Zen In Your Own Japanese Garden

February 17, 2009

How did y’all spend your loooong holiday weekend? I hope it wasn’t at work? 😦 As for yours truly, it was spent working on our poor, neglected yard.

It’s been over a year since we moved in, but because of all of the wedding planning hysteria, the only work we’ve been able to do was to put in a handful of stepping stones to our side garden. With our lives settling down a bit more, there’s been more time to devote to the crib. As such, we’ve taken on the challenge of doing a Japanese garden.

After several months spent studying books, shopping at Home Depot and Kiso and sweating bullets in the yard, our masterpiece is complete. Not bad for first time green thumb-ers eh?

Our Japanese Garden
Our Japanese Garden

Wanna build your own? Here’s what we did.

1) Bought bamboo border from Home Depot. It was about $7 per yard.
2) Bought 3.5 tons of filler 3/4 Grade A aggregate blue rock from Ameron Hawaii (yes, 3.5 tons… I bundled the order with a few friends). Retail was about $165 plus hauling ($122.10).
3) Bought the rest of the rocks (3 rock-like cement stepping stones, 2 bags of large river rocks for edging and 3 bags of Manchurian Jade river rock for river bed) from Kiso Store (94-995 Waipahu St Waipahu, HI. 96797, Phone: 808-671-7482). Total was about $140 something.
4) After digging the dirt appropriately, you pretty much just lay everything out over the weed blocker first layer.

Here’s an animation of the fruits of our labor.

Whatchu tink? Any tips of advice from you expert yard peeps? Stuffs to add? Things to do to enhance da buggah? Anything! I’m all ears.

Fave Five Friday – Scary Movies

February 13, 2009

Since today is Friday the 13th, *insert scary music here* we’re gonna switch gears and take a slight break from our Desert Island FFFridays. This week’s Five? Scariest Movies. How apropos, eh? 🙂

As made obvious by my list, I don’t really get out much when it comes to watching scary movies. Haha! Help a brutha out by sending yours won’tcha?

  1. The Exorcist – the site of little Linda Blair’s spinning head is forever stuck in my memory. What makes it even more scary is the supposed “Exorcist curse” that hovers over everything related to the movie. *shudder*
  2. Jaws – there’s nothing scarier than touching on human emotions that people can relate to. I can’t relate too much to a spinning head, but living on an island surrounded by water, I can definitely relate to sharks. Yikes!
  3. The Silence of the Lambs – holy cr@p! Anthony Hopkins was scarrrry!
  4. Children of the Corn – I don’t really remember much about this movie. I do remember being scared watching it when a friend’s parent’s rented it. Thanks a lot bad babysitters! 😛
  5. Se7en – wasn’t quite sure what to put here, but it was either Seven or Beetle Juice. 😛 The head in the box was an interesting twist though.

Edumacate me by sending yours over mmmkay? Shooooots!

Happy Aloha Friday (and weekend) y’all!
