Hawaii Five-0 & American Idol Chatter (4/19/11) #H50

April 19, 2011

You like how I combo-plattered dat one yeah!? ๐Ÿ˜› Das cause I know I could (potentially) get da fans of both Hawaii Five-0 AND American Idol to chat with me down below. I know, I know, shmall kine desperate, but whatdaheck… We go geev um one try anyway! ๐Ÿ˜‰

#H50

Ho’opa’iWhen a crime lord moves against the family of an undercover NYPD detective who infiltrated his organization, it’s up to Five-0 to stop the policeman from exacting revenge.

As usual, there was active and amusing #H50 chatter last night on Twitter to go along with the show. Some notes on the show for us to talk about today:

  • Hilarious how Kamekona referred to SPAM as “the Hawaiian steak” and “the nectar of the islands”! But wea’s da SPAM Musubi gundtfunnit? LOL!
  • The return of the ridiculous Waiola Shave Ice ad on McGarrett’s cast. I wonder how much they paid to get on the show??? And how da heck do I get that kind of exposure for Oceanic Mobile up in the heezy? 8)
  • What did y’all think of Puff Daddy’s/P Diddy’s/Diddy’s/Diddy Dirty Money’s/Sean Combs’ acting? Needs work ah? ๐Ÿ˜›
  • And how about those Kia hamsters in the commercial? Cute or annoying?

Just a reminder, next week’s episode is a rerun, but the following 3 weeks should all be new episodes to close out this first season! Woo hoo!

American Idol – Top 7

Here are my notes this week on the American Idol (Top 7) Contestants. Add comments for your favorites below!

  • Casey Abrams – Wasn’t too fond of his last performance. Didn’t quite get it. And what was with the standing O from the judges?
  • Haley Reinhart – Hopefully, she rebounds with a better performance this week or Lauren may be the only wahine left.
  • Jacob Lusk – I like that he’s trying to sing songs straight forward nowadays, but still not too fond of his style.
  • James Durbin – Turned me off a little with his attitude towards the mentors last week, but gotsta give him props for standing up for what he believes in.
  • Lauren Alaina – Looking forward to another awesome performance from my favorite to win it all!
  • Scotty McCreery – Gotta give him credit for keeping his ego in check as of late (or at least acting like it for TV). His singing (or maybe song choice) is picking up too.
  • Stefano Langone – Here’s one whose ego has gotten the best of him. He’s my prediction to leave this week.

Aloha means goodbye:

My picks for the Top 3 finalists are:

  1. Lauren Alaina
  2. Casey Abrams
  3. Karen Rodriguez

Shooooots! Have a good one y’all!

American Idol Chatter – Top 8

April 12, 2011

So the last time we dished on Idol, we had 13. Now, we’re down to just 8 going into this week. Y’all still watchin’? Holla!

I gotta be honest. For the first time ever, I’ve been doing the speed-watching technique (I โค my DVR!). Just not catching my interest this season for some reason. I fast-forward through all the nonsense chatter, and just watch the package before the contestants sing (to get a feel for their personality) and then their actual performance. I give that a few seconds and if it bores me to tears, it’s more fast forwarding for me.

I actually watch everything (package and performance) on Casey Abrams (still seems humble and buggah makes me laugh), Haley Reinhart (why not?), Lauren Alaina (seems humble and is still my pick to win!), and Scotty McCreery (to see if I can catch more arrogance from him). The others, I’ll just watch the first few seconds of their performance if anything.

Here’s my previous notes from the American Idol Chatter – Top 13 blog, with updated, Top 8 notes. Add your own comments for your favorite contestants at the bottom!

  • Casey Abrams – LOOOOOVE this guy! He cracks me up! He reminds me of Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen combined. Plus he can SAAAANG, and he still seems humble! (I still feel the same. Thank goodness he got saved!)
  • Haley Reinhart – good eye candy (right rayboyjr?), plus she can sing pretty good too. Don’t think she has what it takes to win though. Also looks like she might lose her temper at one of the judges down the road. (I still feel the same. American public is probably getting sick of her antics pretty soon.)
  • Jacob Lusk – pretty good singer, but don’t really like the way he overstylizes everything. If he sang straight-forward, he’d be a lot better. (Still feel the same.)
  • James Durbin – Adam Lambert copycat. He can scream-sing ok, but not sure how he’ll do with regular songs. (Still feel the same.)
  • Lauren Alaina – My pick to win. She’s so naturally talented and sings without any effort. Seems humble too. I like that. (Still feel the same)
  • Paul McDonald – very quirky, but I like it. Seems like a nice guy and his smile is infectious. (Still feel the same, though I wonder if his style is getting repetitive?)
  • Scotty McCreery – CAN’T STAND HIM!!! You can just tell how conceited he is. He is his own #1 fan. Dear lord he better not win! I will admit that he has a good country singing voice, but I can’t stand listening to somebody so into himself. He reminds me of last season’s Michael Lynche! And he tries to act all nice and respectful, but I’m not buying it! ๐Ÿ˜› (Still feel the same. Even J-Lo told him to not get into his own head too much! I LOVE IT! You can tell that he’s trying to tone it down a little bit and act humble, but I’m still not buying it!)
  • Stefano Langone – pretty strong voice in the upper register. Seems nice, but talks too much. (He’s starting to annoy me and needs to go. He still talks too much and seems to be getting conceited as well.)

Eliminated Notes:

  • Ashton Jones – way too much spunk/confidence for me. There’s more show than singing so far to me. (Not a surprise at all that she got eliminated early.)
  • Karen Rodriguez – one of my favorite girls to win the whole thing. She can blow! (This was a slight shocker! I thought she could sing the lights out!)
  • Naima Adedapo – No idea why she made it. I can appreciate that she has so much passion for singing, but I still haven’t seen anything worthwhile from her. I hope she proves me wrong, because I really think the judges made a mistake by not putting Robbie Rosen through. (Not really a surprise that she got eliminated)
  • Pia Toscano – OK, and pretty good voice. Need to hear more from her to have a better opinion. (WHAT IN THE HECK!!!??? I thought for sure she should’ve stayed on until close to the end. Maybe America assumed she would be safe???)
  • Thia Megia – kinda quiet, but can sing pretty good. That Michael Jackson comparison from Randy Jackson was a reach I thought, but she has a pretty good voice. Wanna see more personality from her. (She can sing, but it wasn’t really a surprise as she lacked the personality for America to latch onto. I’m sure she’ll do fine as she is still so young and talented).

My picks for the Top 3 finalists are:

  1. Lauren Alaina
  2. Casey Abrams
  3. Karen Rodriguez

Talk to me!
* Is it me or is Steven Tyler the worst judge ever invented? He says “Beautiful” like 100 times a show for everything and doesn’t offer any constructive advice/criticism at all. I think I want Paula back! LOL!
* Can we all agree that J-Lo is awesome? She seems so genuine and that she really cares for the contestants. Her advice is always on point too.
* Have you guys heard about the budding romance between Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart? Oooooh… rumors! LOL!
* What do you think of the contestants left? Any surprises?
* Who is your pick to win it all?

Have a good one y’all!

In other news…

Kokua for Japan The Oceanic Time Warner Cable and Clear Channel Radio Hawaii produced Kokua for Japan event that I mentioned last week, was a HUGE success! Through the generous donations of both attendees as well as corporations and online donations, the event was able to raise a whopping 1.6 million dollars! WOW is all I gotta say! Great job Hawaii! American Idol Chatter – Top 13

March 7, 2011

OK, so I’m a lil’ behind on this topic, but bettah late den nevah right? Besides, it’s a good way to start our week off riiiight?

So last week, the American public (and judges) narrowed down the American Idol finalists to the top 13. Let’s use this forum to gossip about our faves, the ones we hate, and other idol idle chatter that comes to mind for this 10th season. I’ll start:

  • Ashton Jones – way too much spunk/confidence for me. There’s more show than singing so far to me.
  • Casey Abrams – LOOOOOVE this guy! He cracks me up! He reminds me of Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen combined. Plus he can SAAAANG, and he still seems humble!

  • Pia Toscano – OK, and pretty good voice. Need to hear more from her to have a better opinion.
Like bet? ๐Ÿ˜›

So how ’bout you guys?

Talk to me!

Fave Friday – Teenage Crushes

May 14, 2010

Playboy Magazine in 3DSo supposedly, some magazine by the name of “Playboy” is jumping on the 3D bandwagon and coming out with a 3D edition of its own some time today. Playboy? I’ve never heard of it. What’s it all about? *grin*

In honor of this magazine I’ve never heard of, I was gonna ask you guys for your fave mags of all time, but we kinda-sorta did that one already. So instead, let’s focus on what every snotty-nosed teenager does what he reads this type of magazine: falls in love. In this case, it’s with Hope Dworaczyk.

Crushes. We’ve all had ’em. Not with Playboy models per se, but growing up with our raging hormones (yeah, I’m talking to you ladies too! ๐Ÿ˜› ), we’ve all secretly (or not so secretly) had our eye on that cute girl/guy in our 5th period history class. (Dear lord, I’m dating myself!) Or perhaps we fell in love with that kid actor on the cover of Tiger Beat magazine, or that cool singer on MTV.

Whoevahz!

Just share your list and share your list good with the rest of the WWE `ohana. We promise not to judge… much! 8)

In no particular order, here are some of mine that I can remember, off the top of my head…

* Alicia Silverstonewhat ever happened to her anyway? Guess this site answers our questions.
* Patricia FordI was actually almost signed on to help her do her official web site, but things kinda fell through. That might’ve been fun eh?
* Pamela Anderson (NSFW) – at least until she got all crazy. Hehe!
* Danica McKellar“Wonder Years”! I always wanted to be “Kevin”! She’s actually a math nerd now!
* Christina ApplegateDem years on “Married with Children”… ’nuff said!
* Girl in my 7th grade math class! – Shhh! LOL!
* Girl in my college history class! – too bad she didn’t know I existed! LOL!

I know, lots yeah!? Da worst part is I know I’m missing some. Bahahaha! Nah, not dat bad… I think!

BTW, do you guys know what a “unicorn” is? My co-worker says that a “unicorn” is someone that you’ll always have feelings for, no matter how long it has been. Is it true that we all have that one “unicorn” in life???

Talk to me!
* What are your thoughts of Playboy Magazine going 3D?
* Post your list of crushes (during your teenage years) in the comment area below! Can be celebs or peeps you know IRL.
* What do you think of the “unicorn” theory? Do you have your own unicorn?

Hijack This!
* Surprised that Cleveland lost to Boston yesterday? What do you think of Bron Bron’s future in Cleveland? How do you think Boston stacks up against my boys in blue (Orlando)?
* Thoughts on Michael Lynche’s departure from American Idol? Think he has a future in music?
* Big weekend planned?

Have a happy VH07v Friday (and weekend) y’all! Shooooooots! ๐Ÿ™‚

Fave Friday: Cover Songs

April 16, 2010

First up. Gotsta give props where props are due. Bruddah kuya.d held it down the last two days with his 209 garnering WIH post. Holy smokes! Much love to all of you who participated in the convo as well! And with that said…

Jason Mraz‘s song “I’m Yours” (whose popularity can actually be traced back to Hawaii’s support) is probably one of the most over played/over done songs in recent history. We’ve seen it on American Idol, all over Youtube, and our very own band Ten Feet even covered it.

Not that that’s a bad thing. Mraz is probably flattered that so many people enjoy his music enough to want to redo it.

Jason Mraz – “I’m Yours”

One band I’ve been grooving out to lately is this a capella band called Straight No Chaser and they have a version of “I’m Yours” (which includes an Iz-ish version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”). Pretty cool. Check it.

Straight No Chaser – “I’m Yours/Somewhere Over the Rainbow”

And let’s not forget the cute, little kid who sang “I’m Yours” in this viral hit:

Little Kid on Youtube – “I’m Yours”

So today’s “Fave Friday” be on that very topic: Cover Songs. Rather than just listing the song name and the various artists who covered it though, let’s make things fun and a little more interactive.

Talk to us!
* Write the name of a covered song and wait for the next person commenting to guess who the original artist, as well as those bands who covered it, was/were.
* Write the name of a band, and wait for the next person commenting to guess the covered song(s) and who the original artist(s) was/were.
* Write the name of a song you wish would be covered and by who.
* Link to your favorite version of “I’m Yours”
* Anything else you like add.

K, your turn! ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy VHO7V Friday! Have a good weekend and I’ll see y’all on Monday! ๐Ÿ™‚

Celebrities Who Could Use Plastic Surgery

January 22, 2010

So the latest gossip these days (or so I hear) is about Heidi Montag’s/Pratt’s plastic surgery craziness, where she apparently underwent 10 surgeries during the fall, completely changing her look. (You can Google it later at your leisure cause it’s probably in the “NSFW” category ๐Ÿ˜› ).

On that note, the “Fave Friday” topic of the day is: Celebrities Who Could Use Plastic Surgery (or maybe even a list of those who shouldn’t have gotten plastic surgery? 8) ). I know there are tons of ’em out there, but the only one I can think of, off the top of my head, is: Barbra Streisand. I’ll leave the rest for you to list below. 8)

Others like DJ Qualls, Steve Buscemi, and former NBA star Sam Cassell qualify, but to me, they are quirky and endearing, and that “different” look is what makes them unique and stand out.

What I can’t stand is when a celebrity is obviously ugly, but yet arrogant and overconfident (i.e. Usher). I know, I know. I know nothing about him on a personal level and it’s shallow for me to come to a crass judgment based simply on what I see, but sorry Usher, you make the list. *grin*

  • Barbra Streisand
  • Usher

Wotchu tink?

Talk to me!
* What other celebrities/athletes would you like to see go under the knife.
* Am I the only one upset over NBC’s ridiculous buyout of Conan O’Brien? I am soooo boycotting Jay Leno now!
* Are you ready for some football? Who you rootin’ for this weekend? Jets, Colts, Vikings, or Saints? Wouldn’t a Colts/Saints Super Bowl be pretty nuts?
* What did you think of the NBA All-Star Voting results?
* Does anybody really care about Tiger Woods in the sex rehab clinic?
* Any A.I. (American Idol) chatter out dea?
* Gooooo Bows! Think they got a shot against #1 WAC ranked La Tech?

Shoots den! Have a great VH07V Friday and an even greater weekend. See you on da flip side! ๐Ÿ™‚

Pants On the Ground

January 15, 2010

The real title was actually “Fave Friday: Comedians” for dis one, but I just had to… ๐Ÿ˜‰ (see bottom if you have no idea what I’m talking about).

In Wednesday’s blog, some of you peeps started talking about old school joints like Gems or Holiday Mart/Daiei, etc., and it made me want to blog about it. Unfortunately, I beat myself to the punch. LOL! Shmall kine forgot that I already did um befo’! *blush*

Instead, let’s do a somewhat newsworthy one. Comic legend Bill Cosby is in town for a couple of shows this weekend. Is he one of your faves? Let’s list ours up. Hurr’s mine:

* Jim Gaffigan – my all time favorite! Wifey bought us tickets when he came to town. HILARIOUS! He also seemed like a nice guy too when we met him to take photos after the show.
* Dave Chappelle – a close second! I would sooooo go watch him if he came here. I’m proud to say that I was his fan way before he blew up. 8)
* Ellen DeGeneres – smart, witty, and most importantly funny! Seems genuine too! Loves it!
* Chris Rock – edgy, funny, a little racist though. LOL! Love his comedy specials!
* Martin Lawrence – ditto the above. Wonder what he’s up to these days. Mah-innnn!
* Dane Cook – used to be one of my fave plays on my iPod. Popularity seems to have majorly plummeted(?)…
* Brian Regan – old school comic that used to make me laugh on Letterman.
* Paula Poundstone – another old school comic. Actually dragged some friends to go watch her when she was doing a show at Pipeline. LOL!

A shout out to our local comics too:

* Rap ReiplingerAuntie Marialani’s Cooking Show is an all-time classic!
* Andy Bumatai – All In the `Ohana still makes me crack up!!!
* Paul Ogata – my fellow Asian brutha!
* Frank DeLima – da originato!
* Augie T – nu skool (kinda)!
* Bu La`ia – wea he stay?
* Mel Cabang – old school, but still funny.

Need help? Check out this list from Wikipedia.

Tanioaka’s Interview
On a side note, I’m scheduled to meet with the good folks at Tanioka’s on Monday for a short interview for Part II of my up-coming “Poke Paradise” article (read Part I here). If you have any questions you’d like me to ask, lemme know! Also, if you have any suggestions on what poke you think I should try from there, let me know too!

Talk to me!
* Post your fave comic(s) below.
* Please help me congradumalate my sis for her good play at the Sony Open Pro-Am da odda day. She played with David Toms, and, from what she tells me, he’s a real southern gentleman type. Gotta love those celebs/athletes who keeps it real! Goooo David! (Read her blog about it here.)
* Again, if ya gots any questions you’d like me to ask to the Taniokas, holla!
* Any American Idol chatter out dea? I really liked Jermaine Sellers (for his voice), Skiibo Ski (for his personality),ย and most importantly, General Larry Platt (for his lyrical geniusness!).

Shoots! Have a great weekend y’all! See ya on the flipside!

Fave Friday: Mate Traits

November 20, 2009

Kay, I’m gonna get shmall kine heat for this one from the fellas out dea, but since it’s one year anniversary time for yours truly and the lady friend wifey, here’s a mushy topic for us to chat about today (sorry boyz!). ๐Ÿ˜›

There’s a new song out on the radio by former American Idol finalist Jason Castro called “Let’s Just Fall In Love Again” (see video and lyrics below). It’s pretty catchy and, dare I say, cute (*cringe*), but more importantly, the lyrics teach us a nice little lessonย about love and how to keep that fire a burnin’ with your mate of many years.

We’ve probably got peeps up in hurr who’ve been married for decades, newlyweds, and even the singles (heyyyy!) looking for love, so along those lines, let’s post our favorite traits of our mates for a fun little Fave Friday listing.

To all y’all singles, your job is funner. List the traits you traditionally look for in a future mate. And fellas, please use “Pager Talk” like 58008 if you’re gonna be pervy! Ahahahaha! Nah! Let’s do this!

  1. Cute (inside and out) –ย I may’ve mentioned this before, but a wise man (my friend) onceย told me: “Pretty is temporary,ย cute lasts forever.” Word.
  2. Supportive – whatever I wish to pursue (Tin Man, getting my real estate license, interviews with celebs, etc.) she’s always so supportive.
  3. Down – is always up for something fun and spontaneous (sports, new restaurants, etc.) and rarely monkus about it. Game for almost anything, as long as it’s with me. Awwww.
  4. Tries Hard – no matter what it is, she tries her best to improve and impress.
  5. Well Liked/Lovable – whether it’s my friends, family, co-workers, etc., she can get along with any of ’em. And they all loooove her. At least that’s what they tell me. ๐Ÿ˜›

Now for the fun list. If I were to put myself in the place of a single person, I’d probably look for the following:

  1. Smile –ย shows that they’re nice (usually).
  2. Honesty – liars are out like trout.
  3. Genuine –ย can’t stand fakeness.
  4. Thoughtfulness – shows that they’re interested in you.
  5. 58008 – Bwahahahahaha! Sorry, I just had to.

So what about you bu? No be shame ’causeย remember, this post is mushy to begin with. ๐Ÿ˜› Post away!

Jason Castro – Let’s Just Fall In Love Again

Let’s pretend baby
That you’ve just met me
And I’ve never seen you before
I’ll tell all my friends
That I think you’re starin’
And you say the same to yours

And oh, we’ll dance around it all night
And then I’ll follow you outside
And try to open up my mouth
And nothing comes out right

And I wanna fall in love with you again
I don’t have to try
It’s so easy
Who needs to pretend?
But because it’s so funny
Let’s just think about it honey
Let’s just fall in love again

I’ll call you in three days
Not too soon, not too late
And I’ll ask your roommate if you’re home
You call me on Thursday
And we’ll hang out all day
Then fall asleep on the phone

And oh, I’ll hold your hand when we drive
And we’ll lose track of all the time
And we’ll tell everyone
That we ain’t never felt so alive

And I wanna fall in love with you again
I don’t have to try
It’s so easy who needs to pretend?
But because it’s so funny
Let’s just think about it honey
Let’s just fall in love again

We’ll fall disgustingly fast
And we’ll stop hangin’ out with friends
And they’ll be so offended

And I wanna fall in love with you again
I don’t have to try
It’s so easy
Who needs to pretend?
But because it’s so funny
Let’s just think about it honey
Let’s just fall in love again

Let’s just fall in love again
So let’s just fall in love again

P.S. For anyone getting married soon, the song above is probably a cute little song for a wedding slideshow or the like. You heard it here first. You’re welcome! ๐Ÿ˜‰
P.P.S. If you post something nice about your mate, and they give you a big fat smooch (or more?) as a result, you’re also welcome! ๐Ÿ˜›

Happy VHO7V Friday! Have a good weekend y’all, and be sure to tell that special someone you love them! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – May 20, 2009

May 20, 2009

A-ightch’all! I know it’s Where In Hawaii Wednesday, but we gotsta dish American Idol right quick. What did you think of last night’s performance? Who did you think did better? How did you have your round by round scoring? Who do you think will take it all? Who do you WANT to take it all?

Overall, I thought it was a so-so show. I anticipated Adam Lambert to have that “moment”, but he really didn’t. Kris Allen’s first two songs were pretty smoove, but his 3rd one left something to be desired. Actually, I think both of their 3rd songs were let downs. There were moments in Adam’s performances when I started growing tired of it (his style). Still trying to figgah out who will sell more records, and my vote is still with Allison Iraheta. ๐Ÿ˜›

Now… on to tha bidness at hand… Where In Hawaii yo!

Last week’s pic was supposed to be a hard one, but yet again, you buggahs never cease to amaze me. Syxx was just the second person to chime in, and, low and behold, got it. What the!?!? I’m hoping that this week’s one will pose a slight problem for at least the first 3 of you, ๐Ÿ˜› but if I were a guessin’ man, I’d bet that it’s gonnaย be another easy one. We shall see…

I’m not gonna lie y’all. I think this week’s one is gonna be a bit of a challenge… Even for you Hawaii experts.ย Put on your thinkin’ caps and get ready to learn, son! Ah, at least the hint this week will actually be a usable for once. Oh yeah, congrats to bruddah Marvo for correctly guessing last week’s location!

A-ight, enough with the chit chat…
