Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – April 29, 2009

April 29, 2009

Supah big mahalos to all of you for your kind words on yesterday’s bloggy blog and for telling me that WIH was one of your favorite blogs. To show my appreciation, I will special post your favorite Where In Hawaii blog on this non-Wednesday. Oh, it’s Wednesday? Oops. At least the thought was there right? 😉

Last weekgetITon got the place correct, but the dish incorrect. But since this is WHERE in Hawaii (and not WHAT in Hawaii like NeedaHobby suggested) (let’s)getITon is da big winnah! Congrats yo!!

If any of you know anything about me, this one will probably be pretty easy, as I go here often. That’s all I’m-a-gonna say. Ack, I said too much. Go!

News Day Tuesday: January 20, 2009

January 20, 2009

Lots goin’ on in the world out dea folks.

We can talk about the obvious, like Bruddah Barack’s historic inauguration today (congrats Barack!), but we all know errbody and their mama will be talking about that up in hurr.

Lessee, we can gossip about American Idol, which will air its 3rd and 4th shows of the season today and tomorrow… but things won’t start gettin’ juicy until they go to Hollywood.

Or how about Tadd Fujikawa’s amazing Sony Open story? How he not only made the cut, but hung with the big boys and finished tied for 32nd!

We can even go old school and chit chat about MMA again. Affliction’s 2nd show, entitled “Day of Reckoning,” pits MMA deity Fedor Emelianenko against hard hitting, former UFC heavyweight champ Andrei Arlovski this weekend.

Or what about Super Bowl talks, now that the two unlikely teams – The Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers – have been decided?

But why pick just one? It’s News Day Tuesday aftah all! How bout’ you decide which topic you wanna talk about and have at it. You can even pick your own newsworthy topic (not mentioned here) and gossip away. Holla! 🙂

I’ll start… and yeah, since I brought um all up, I’ll talk about um all.

* Barack Obama Inauguration

It’s gonna be another busy day at work, but I’ll try to sneak a peek every once in a while to catch history in the making. I’ll also be recording it at home. Doesn’t hurt that bruddah has ties to Hawaii and we claim him as our own. 🙂

* American Idol, Season 8

I used to be an avid fan, but the bad auditions are starting to get to me. I almost just want them to get to Hollywood already and get on with the show with the good singers. It’s been good to see many cultures and backgrounds getting through so far. Hopefully the diversity continues…

* Tadd Fujikawa at the Sony Open

I was there in 07 when Tadd burst onto the scene so it’s nice to see that he’s still holding it down. Bruddah’s not a one hit wonder. He’s in it to win it baby and ya just gotsta admire that! Goooo Tadd!

* Affliction Day or Reckoning

Top to bottom, this is yet another insane card, but for some reason, I’m not sure I have the urge to order it. Their first card was lukewarm for me, so I’m just afraid it will be the same. Ah, we’ll see. Really interested to see: Fedor vs. Arlovski (obviously!), Barnett vs. Yvel, Horodecki vs. Lauzon, Baby Fedor (Sidellnikov), Matyushenko, and Bao Quach.

* Super Bowl XLIII: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals

Talk about a snoozefest. Nah, I guess the Warner story is a good one, but I wish the teams were a little more exciting. I’ll be in Vegas that weekend, but will probably go snowboarding instead of watching the game. *yawn* If I had to pick one, I’d go with ‘Zona.

Fave Five Friday – Guilty Pleasures

August 8, 2008

Much love to C to tha G for this one, aka Chicken Grease. It’s a good one, even though I’m not sure if I can even think of 5 for myself. Haha! Anyway, how about it? Let’s celebrate Fave Five Friday together by posting your “Guilty Pleasures” list below! Holla!

  1. The Hills – the future brother in law gives me heat for watching this with the lady and his gf (while giggling in our pjs), but it’s pretty addicting now that I know the story behind these peeps. Haha!
  2. Flavor of Love – this show is such utter nonsense, but I love it! It’s sad/depressing that he (supposedly) won’t be doing any more.
  3. Toppo – you know that stick like snack from Japan filled with chocolate in the middle? Mmmmm!
  4. Dixie Chicks – I actually dig on country music in general. Yee haw!
  5. Boxer Briefs – Not even sure if this counts as a guilty pleasure, but cut me some slack, I’m reaching here. Hehe! Anyway, no to boxers and a hella no to tighty whiteys (sp?), so where better to settle than in between? Comfort with support. Loves it!

Well, there you have it. Way more of me than you cared to know. Don’t leave me hangin’ and make me look like the only crazy one out thurr. Spill the beans yo!

Have a nice weekend y’all!

P.S. In other news, ex porn queen Jenna Jameson is reportedly preggers from boyfriend and MMA fighter Tito Ortiz. I’ll bite my tongue and leave the smart comments to you folks… Also, Ortiz has reportedly signed with Affliction and may be on their October card FYI. Thoughts?

Recap of UFC, Affliction, Dream Weekend

July 21, 2008

Happy Manic Monday Errone. Another big weekend in MMA. Did y’all catch it? Let’s recap shall we?

UFC Fight Night: Silva vs. Irvin (Fight Card)
Rory Markham continues his success with a Rashad Evans-esque roundhouse knockout of Brodie Farber. CB Dollaway tricks us all with a unique (but self-proclaimed favorite) Peruvian necktie choke on Jesse Taylor (I wanna try that one!). The latest rumor is that Taylor is close to being kicked out of the UFC (again) after disparaging remarks he made about Quinton Rampage Jackson’s latest troubles. Good for him if that is the case. Two strikes and you’re out if you ask me. I was surprised that Kevin Burns lasted as long as he did against a beast like Anthony Johnson, let alone win by TKO over him. Granted the eyepoke caused it, but like Johnson said in his post fight interview, give it up for Burns. Cain Velasquez put Jake O’Brien in a crucifix arms to stop him, while Frankie Edgar showed that he only has one gear (forward) over his decision win over Hermes Franca. Brandon Vera looked very unimpressive over a decision win over Reese Andy (I thought he would walk through him), and finally… the main event! Anderon Silva does it again! We all knew his technical skills would pick apart the brawler in James Irvin, but 1:01 in the first round? WOW! That straight right after catching Irvin’s kick was so short and compact, but the fact that it had enough power behind it to knock Irvin down, woah! I can’t think of anyone who will be able to beat Silva besides Silva.

Affliction Banned (Fight Card)
Paul Buentello looked unimpressive yet again against an out of shape, last minute addition in Gary Goodridge. Was really looking forward to seeing watching Aleksander Emelianenko too! 😦 Vitor Belfort looked like the Vitor of old and really impressed in his decisive knockout of Terry Martin. Edwin Dewees was overmatched, as expected against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Mike Pyle impressed against a green JJ Ambrose. Renato Sobral vs. Mike Whitehead and Matt Lindland vs. Fabio Negao were snoozers. I didn’t expect that from Lindland. Until this point, it looked like Affliction was a bust (boring as heck). And then… Josh Barnett surprised with an uncharacteristic knockout (jumping left hook) of Pedro Rizzo. Andrei Arlovski vs. Ben Rothwell was a snoozer until the Andrei of old showed up at the end of the second and then into the third when he knocked out Big Ben. And then… HOLY COW! Fedor Emelianenko answered all questions about his #1 ranking when he just ran through Tim Sylvia with a flurry of punch combinations and then a modified rear naked choke using his forearm! W-O-W! Bring on Couture!

Dream 5 (Fight Card)
Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto’s injury was unfortunate, but the show sure did go on. Eddie Alvarez impressed again in a gritty knockout of a tough, game Tatsuya Kawajiri, but suffered an eye injury (from a right cross) in the process. He almost made a critical mistake by thinking Kawajiri was done, but jumped in to finish the job after the referee told him to keep going. Did you see that insanely quick triangle lockup of Caol Uno compliments of Shinya Aoki! Jeez! That was lightning quick and I just had to rewind that like 5 times to watch it carefully! It almost looked like he let Uno out of the guard to set that up. But how about Uno’s heart? That triangle was TIGHT! I cheered when he got out of it! LOL! Joachim Hansen‘s arm-bar submission victory over the Black Mamba (Kultar Gill) set the stage for his path to the final. Urijah Faber’s protégé Joseph Benavidez made quick work of Kodo, while Hideo Tokoro stopped Takeshi Yamazaki in the second. That Tokoro guy impresses me with his speed and athleticism. Kuniyoshi Hironaka split open Motoki Miyazawa‘s forehead with a straight right, causing the doctor to stop the fight, while Yoshihiro Akiyama used his gi to his advantage to choke out Katsuyori Shibata from the top. Alistair Overeem proved he is a star in the making with an impressive arm lock over an out of shape Mark Hunt. Hansen’s straight left from the top found it’s mark on Aoki’s chin as he jumped on to finish the job. Aoki cried as usual, but you could really feel the pain from Alvarez’s tears during his speech. You know the Alvarez Hansen 2 matchup will be a good one. As a fan, I also want to see the Alvarez Aoki matchup some time in the future.

Talk to me!
Whatchu think? Were my observations pretty accurate or ya got something to say? Holla atcho boy! 🙂 Have a good week all!

And finally… For those non-MMA fans out there, here’s a snap from yet another Acai Bowl I’m enjoying on this Acai quest, this time from Diamond Head Cove Health Bar off Monsarrat. Look for the first in my two part series on the first of the month at AroundHawaii.com!

Anderson Silva to Fight On FREE TV!

June 19, 2008

It’s official. The fight for MMA supremacy is on like Donkey Kong!

The rumors were just confirmed that the UFC has put together a card to be aired on July 19th, the very same night that rival league startup Affliction is to air their Banned card on Pay-Per-View. The card will feature Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva moving up to Light Heavyweight to face James “The Sandman” Irvin and will be aired on SpikeTV (Digital Channel 0559) for free.

And that’s not the end of it. There have also been rumors that the UFC is considering putting together yet another card for July 26th to go up against the next scheduled CBS EliteXC event on broadcast television. It’s getting insane in the membrane.

Then again, the UFC has always been the dominant name in MMA. They’re just pushing their muscle around. Ultimately, this is, I think, a good thing for us fans. We get to see the best in MMA competition, regardless of the organization who puts it on.

Talk to me!
* What do y’all think of this?
* Which are you planning to watch? Personally, I’m doing the DVR thang! 🙂
* Do you think Affliction (who is now backed by Donald Trump) can get some traction with their big names?
