I know, I know, there are not many to choose from, in terms of really well-known chefs from Hawaii. Let’s see, off the top of my head, we got the big dogs like Roy Yamaguchi, Alan Wong, Sam Choy, Russell Siu, Chai Chaowasaree, Chef Mavro (George Mavrothalassitis), etc., and some of the lesser known, but equally impressive, like Hideaki “Santa” Miyoshi, Collin Nishida and Onjin Kim (anybody know what happened to her btw?).
In the comment area below, list your favorite Hawaii Chef(s) and why. Whether it be their cooking ability, ono-ness of their restaurant, their personality, or all of the above. I have a few for various reasons:
Hideaki “Santa” Miyoshi: He’s the co-owner of Tokkuri-Tei, my all-time favorite restaurant, hands-down. He’s down to earth and has a hilarious sense of humor. Santa always makes me crack up without even saying a word.
Chuck Furuya: Yeah, he’s not really a chef, but close enough. He runs Vino Italian Tapas & Wine Bar in Restaurant Row, and, oh by the way, is one of only two Master Sommeliers in the state of Hawaii. He’s genuine and friendly and has a knack for taking the intimidation out of wine. Back in college when I worked at KHET Hawaii Public Television, we filmed a segment with him for one of our shows. During setup, he yells to this little student grunt (me) across the room and says “Eh, I know you! I played ball with you in Hawaii Kai the other weekend! Remember me?” Stunned, I was like “Huh!?” Then I realized he was talking to me and was able to muster up this glorious response: “Me? Oh yeah!” We continued to shoot segments with him and he would always take the time to make conversation with all of us about anything and everything. Recently, I saw him with his son at Cafe Laufer and he still recognized me and shook my hand. What an awesome guy!
Sam Choy: just seems really friendly and welcoming. Plus, he loves him some poke. My kinda guy!
Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong: though insanely intimidating, these two guys seem warm hearted in person and continue to stay true to their roots, choosing to buy local whenever possible. My “claim to fame” for Roy Yamaguchi was that I gave him a ride to and from Roy’s Hawaii Kai – in my little Civic hatchback – before and after a shoot in our KHET studios (I lived in Hawaii Kai at the time and it was looked at as a better, more economical idea than sending a production van out to Hawaii Kai to pick him up). My “claim to fame” for Alan Wong was actually a few days ago when I interviewed him for Part II of my “Poke Paradise” series for AroundHawaii.com, set to be published on February 1st. 8) Here’s a little sneak peek for y’all! LOL! This week’s photo gave me a bit of a chuckle.
Beforetime, I went to the beach with my friends and snapped a quick shot of them chillin’ in the sun. Since the resolution on my camera is reasonably decent, I’m able to crop out just a teeny portion of the photo from the background/surrounding areas. So there I was, in Photoshop, dragging around my 500×375 dotted rectangle, trying to find an interesting shot for you guys for this week’s WIH contest.
And then… it appeared before me! Like two moons outta nowhere… Literally! 😛
Before I go on though, lemme preface this photo with a warning. It may be a shade [NSFW], depending on where you work. So the latest gossip these days (or so I hear) is about Heidi Montag’s/Pratt’s plastic surgery craziness, where she apparently underwent 10 surgeries during the fall, completely changing her look. (You can Google it later at your leisure cause it’s probably in the “NSFW” category 😛 ).
On that note, the “Fave Friday” topic of the day is: Celebrities Who Could Use Plastic Surgery (or maybe even a list of those who shouldn’t have gotten plastic surgery? 8) ). I know there are tons of ’em out there, but the only one I can think of, off the top of my head, is: Barbra Streisand. I’ll leave the rest for you to list below. 8)
Others like DJ Qualls, Steve Buscemi, and former NBA star Sam Cassell qualify, but to me, they are quirky and endearing, and that “different” look is what makes them unique and stand out.
What I can’t stand is when a celebrity is obviously ugly, but yet arrogant and overconfident (i.e. Usher). I know, I know. I know nothing about him on a personal level and it’s shallow for me to come to a crass judgment based simply on what I see, but sorry Usher, you make the list. *grin*

Woah. Bruddah kuya.d has been on FIYAH lately. He was the first to break the back-to-back stalemate and has gone on to get correct answers 5 weeks in a row now. Along with him, Takeshi collected the second turkey in WIH history while BananaFysh, Coconut Willy, and rayboyjr all went for a lil’ back-to-back action last week. Props dewz, kesh, BF(F), Dubbs and beej! 🙂
It’s been a while since I featured any yummy food photos up in hurr so I wanted to do one this week. I was *thiiiiis* close to posting one but the photo quality wasn’t all that great… Plus too, I think it was shmall kine obvious. So I decided to class things up a bit and take a photo of a random batchroom somewhere in the 808. Some of you should be pretty happy about this, espesh uncle jimmy. 😉

OK, so these Photography at the Right Angle caption contests have not exactly been errry week as advertised, but I think it’s a-ight. Changes da pace just a little no? But since you’ve been so desperately dying/begging for it (secretly in your deep sleep 😛 ), we be bringin’ it back for the third week.
Before then, however, I’d like to take the time to congratumalate Dave for his amusing caption for week 2’s photo: “Eh? No can hear. Got beer in my ear.” Applicable, and memory inducing, all with a lil’ bit o’ local flair. Props Dave!

The real title was actually “Fave Friday: Comedians” for dis one, but I just had to… 😉 (see bottom if you have no idea what I’m talking about).
In Wednesday’s blog, some of you peeps started talking about old school joints like Gems or Holiday Mart/Daiei, etc., and it made me want to blog about it. Unfortunately, I beat myself to the punch. LOL! Shmall kine forgot that I already did um befo’! *blush*
Instead, let’s do a somewhat newsworthy one. Comic legend Bill Cosby is in town for a couple of shows this weekend. Is he one of your faves? Let’s list ours up. Hurr’s mine:
* Jim Gaffigan – my all time favorite! Wifey bought us tickets when he came to town. HILARIOUS! He also seemed like a nice guy too when we met him to take photos after the show.
* Dave Chappelle – a close second! I would sooooo go watch him if he came here. I’m proud to say that I was his fan way before he blew up. 8)
* Ellen DeGeneres – smart, witty, and most importantly funny! Seems genuine too! Loves it!
* Chris Rock – edgy, funny, a little racist though. LOL! Love his comedy specials!
* Martin Lawrence – ditto the above. Wonder what he’s up to these days. Mah-innnn!
* Dane Cook – used to be one of my fave plays on my iPod. Popularity seems to have majorly plummeted(?)…
* Brian Regan – old school comic that used to make me laugh on Letterman.
* Paula Poundstone – another old school comic. Actually dragged some friends to go watch her when she was doing a show at Pipeline. LOL!

It appears as though this is a common issue for many frustrated Android users out there, so I’m posting what I did – which actually worked! – in the hopes that it will help at least a few of you out.
A Little Background:
I purchased the Droid on opening day, but never set up my Exchange email until recently (more than two months after the fact). Just never had the need really. After setting it up, it ran pretty smoothly for several weeks. I’ve (apparently) been fortunate enough to not run into the dreaded “The application Email (process com.android.email) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.” error message… Until Now!
The Problem:
From what I’ve read, the root of the issue is a bug in the Email app/program related to unparsable email headers. When you get an email with such headers (which sorta explains why my email was working fine for a while), you will get the error message above.
The Non-Solutions:
– Killing the app (with programs like Advanced Task Killer Free) and restarting the app doesn’t work.
– Rebooting and restarting the app doesn’t work.
– Killing the app PLUS Rebooting and then restarting the app doesn’t work. Trust me, I’ve tried several times.
– Attempting to kill the app in “Manage applications” doesn’t work (well sorta) because it’s not readily listed and not easy to find (see solution below).
The Solution:
1 ) Go into your email from your desktop client and delete or file away (archive) the latest emails that you suspect may’ve started to cause this issue.
2 )Â From your Android device, go to Settings.
3 ) Select Applications
4 ) Select Manage Applications
5 ) Hit your Menu option/button (the one with four lines usually between the Back/Return button and the Home button)
6 ) Select Filter
7 ) Select Running in the Filter Options pop-up menu.
8 ) Scroll down and select Email. (If it’s not in the list, you probably killed it. Go back and start it first and then return to step 1.)
9 ) In the Email app’s Application Info screen, press the Clear data button. (Be advised that this will essentially clear all of your account info from the Email app, causing you to have to re-set everything up again like your login name, password, server names, etc. The exact prompt says, “All of this application’s data will be deleted permanently. This includes all files, settings, accounts, databases and so on.” Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean it will delete your emails on the server.)
10 ) Open up the Email app again and it will prompt you to set everything up again (log in name, password, servers, etc.). Walah! The error message should now be gone.

I have a few: Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip (#12), Dream more while you are awake (#13), and What other people think of you is none of your business (#26). I think gossip is such a waste of energy. Dream while you are awake is a good one! And for #26, just be yourself. Who cares what other people think.
* Which is one you’d like to work on the most this year? “Eat breakfast like a king/queen, lunch like a prince/princess & dinner like a beggar” (#2). I always tell myself to eat breakfast (cause I always hear that it’s the most important meal of the day), but never seem to be able to stick to it. I do want to eat a smaller dinner too. The “Read more books than you did in 2009 (#6)” one is pretty funny too cause that would be duck soup for me. I just have to read one! 😉
