Hawaii Five-0 & American Idol Chatter (4/19/11) #H50

April 19, 2011

You like how I combo-plattered dat one yeah!? πŸ˜› Das cause I know I could (potentially) get da fans of both Hawaii Five-0 AND American Idol to chat with me down below. I know, I know, shmall kine desperate, but whatdaheck… We go geev um one try anyway! πŸ˜‰

#H50

Ho’opa’iWhen a crime lord moves against the family of an undercover NYPD detective who infiltrated his organization, it’s up to Five-0 to stop the policeman from exacting revenge.

As usual, there was active and amusing #H50 chatter last night on Twitter to go along with the show. Some notes on the show for us to talk about today:

  • Hilarious how Kamekona referred to SPAM as “the Hawaiian steak” and “the nectar of the islands”! But wea’s da SPAM Musubi gundtfunnit? LOL!
  • The return of the ridiculous Waiola Shave Ice ad on McGarrett’s cast. I wonder how much they paid to get on the show??? And how da heck do I get that kind of exposure for Oceanic Mobile up in the heezy? 8)
  • What did y’all think of Puff Daddy’s/P Diddy’s/Diddy’s/Diddy Dirty Money’s/Sean Combs’ acting? Needs work ah? πŸ˜›
  • And how about those Kia hamsters in the commercial? Cute or annoying?

Just a reminder, next week’s episode is a rerun, but the following 3 weeks should all be new episodes to close out this first season! Woo hoo!

American Idol – Top 7

Here are my notes this week on the American Idol (Top 7) Contestants. Add comments for your favorites below!

  • Casey Abrams – Wasn’t too fond of his last performance. Didn’t quite get it. And what was with the standing O from the judges?
  • Haley Reinhart – Hopefully, she rebounds with a better performance this week or Lauren may be the only wahine left.
  • Jacob Lusk – I like that he’s trying to sing songs straight forward nowadays, but still not too fond of his style.
  • James Durbin – Turned me off a little with his attitude towards the mentors last week, but gotsta give him props for standing up for what he believes in.
  • Lauren Alaina – Looking forward to another awesome performance from my favorite to win it all!
  • Scotty McCreery – Gotta give him credit for keeping his ego in check as of late (or at least acting like it for TV). His singing (or maybe song choice) is picking up too.
  • Stefano Langone – Here’s one whose ego has gotten the best of him. He’s my prediction to leave this week.

Aloha means goodbye:

My picks for the Top 3 finalists are:

  1. Lauren Alaina
  2. Casey Abrams
  3. Karen Rodriguez

Shooooots! Have a good one y’all!

American Idol Chatter – Top 8

April 12, 2011

So the last time we dished on Idol, we had 13. Now, we’re down to just 8 going into this week. Y’all still watchin’? Holla!

I gotta be honest. For the first time ever, I’ve been doing the speed-watching technique (I ❀ my DVR!). Just not catching my interest this season for some reason. I fast-forward through all the nonsense chatter, and just watch the package before the contestants sing (to get a feel for their personality) and then their actual performance. I give that a few seconds and if it bores me to tears, it’s more fast forwarding for me.

I actually watch everything (package and performance) on Casey Abrams (still seems humble and buggah makes me laugh), Haley Reinhart (why not?), Lauren Alaina (seems humble and is still my pick to win!), and Scotty McCreery (to see if I can catch more arrogance from him). The others, I’ll just watch the first few seconds of their performance if anything.

Here’s my previous notes from the American Idol Chatter – Top 13 blog, with updated, Top 8 notes. Add your own comments for your favorite contestants at the bottom!

  • Casey Abrams – LOOOOOVE this guy! He cracks me up! He reminds me of Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen combined. Plus he can SAAAANG, and he still seems humble! (I still feel the same. Thank goodness he got saved!)
  • Haley Reinhart – good eye candy (right rayboyjr?), plus she can sing pretty good too. Don’t think she has what it takes to win though. Also looks like she might lose her temper at one of the judges down the road. (I still feel the same. American public is probably getting sick of her antics pretty soon.)
  • Jacob Lusk – pretty good singer, but don’t really like the way he overstylizes everything. If he sang straight-forward, he’d be a lot better. (Still feel the same.)
  • James Durbin – Adam Lambert copycat. He can scream-sing ok, but not sure how he’ll do with regular songs. (Still feel the same.)
  • Lauren Alaina – My pick to win. She’s so naturally talented and sings without any effort. Seems humble too. I like that. (Still feel the same)
  • Paul McDonald – very quirky, but I like it. Seems like a nice guy and his smile is infectious. (Still feel the same, though I wonder if his style is getting repetitive?)
  • Scotty McCreery – CAN’T STAND HIM!!! You can just tell how conceited he is. He is his own #1 fan. Dear lord he better not win! I will admit that he has a good country singing voice, but I can’t stand listening to somebody so into himself. He reminds me of last season’s Michael Lynche! And he tries to act all nice and respectful, but I’m not buying it! πŸ˜› (Still feel the same. Even J-Lo told him to not get into his own head too much! I LOVE IT! You can tell that he’s trying to tone it down a little bit and act humble, but I’m still not buying it!)
  • Stefano Langone – pretty strong voice in the upper register. Seems nice, but talks too much. (He’s starting to annoy me and needs to go. He still talks too much and seems to be getting conceited as well.)

Eliminated Notes:

  • Ashton Jones – way too much spunk/confidence for me. There’s more show than singing so far to me. (Not a surprise at all that she got eliminated early.)
  • Karen Rodriguez – one of my favorite girls to win the whole thing. She can blow! (This was a slight shocker! I thought she could sing the lights out!)
  • Naima Adedapo – No idea why she made it. I can appreciate that she has so much passion for singing, but I still haven’t seen anything worthwhile from her. I hope she proves me wrong, because I really think the judges made a mistake by not putting Robbie Rosen through. (Not really a surprise that she got eliminated)
  • Pia Toscano – OK, and pretty good voice. Need to hear more from her to have a better opinion. (WHAT IN THE HECK!!!??? I thought for sure she should’ve stayed on until close to the end. Maybe America assumed she would be safe???)
  • Thia Megia – kinda quiet, but can sing pretty good. That Michael Jackson comparison from Randy Jackson was a reach I thought, but she has a pretty good voice. Wanna see more personality from her. (She can sing, but it wasn’t really a surprise as she lacked the personality for America to latch onto. I’m sure she’ll do fine as she is still so young and talented).

My picks for the Top 3 finalists are:

  1. Lauren Alaina
  2. Casey Abrams
  3. Karen Rodriguez

Talk to me!
* Is it me or is Steven Tyler the worst judge ever invented? He says “Beautiful” like 100 times a show for everything and doesn’t offer any constructive advice/criticism at all. I think I want Paula back! LOL!
* Can we all agree that J-Lo is awesome? She seems so genuine and that she really cares for the contestants. Her advice is always on point too.
* Have you guys heard about the budding romance between Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart? Oooooh… rumors! LOL!
* What do you think of the contestants left? Any surprises?
* Who is your pick to win it all?

Have a good one y’all!

In other news…

Kokua for Japan The Oceanic Time Warner Cable and Clear Channel Radio Hawaii produced Kokua for Japan event that I mentioned last week, was a HUGE success! Through the generous donations of both attendees as well as corporations and online donations, the event was able to raise a whopping 1.6 million dollars! WOW is all I gotta say! Great job Hawaii! Hawaii Five-0: Ke Kinohi #H50

January 4, 2011

Gotta go sleep early tonight (last night), but here’s a quick wrap-up of tonight’s (last night’s) NEW episode of Hawaii Five-0: “Ke Kinohi” (The Beginning):

“When McGarrett’s sister is kidnapped and his father’s Champion box stolen from his apartment, Steve and Five-0 discover new clues in his mother’s murder, including possible ties to the Japanese Yakuza on the next episode of Hawaii Five-0.”

Talking points for us:

  • I wish my bed head (hair) looked like Alex O’Loughlin’s in the morning! Ahahaha!
  • Ninja say what!? Ninjas in Hawaii? Really? And samurai swords? Oh geez.
  • And I thought ninjas didn’t make noise. Those were some heavy footed ninjas! LOL!
  • Did I say ninja enough or wot?
  • Since when was Kaimuki along the water? And with Chinaman’s Hat in the background?
  • When they chased and stopped the car from the helicopter, they just started shooting based on a broken tail light. Thank goodness that was the right car!
  • Guess Steve McGarrett’s sister didn’t get the family genes. I keeeed! 8)
  • The Five-0’s CPU is sick! Love, love looovvvvve how you can just drop a device on the touch screen and extract files from there! Probably how computers in the future will be!
  • I didn’t know the Bosozoku (“baby yakuza”) has their meetings at Pipeline Cafe!
  • Funny line from Danno: “Walk up steps like a human.”
  • I think I could’ve kept it real and played one of the baby yakuza no? 8)
  • Is that stick figure code fo’ real?
  • Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (@CHTagawa) is one mean villain actor!
  • Nice to see the Governor drinking beer from the Five-0’s stash, all on company time! LOL!
  • Anyone else catch the baby yakuza’s car’s license plate: RU2 BE6? Call me a detective already! πŸ˜› Think that stands for anything? “Are You Two Be Sex?” LOL!
  • Where is the Kaimuki Country Club???
  • Didn’t Koji look like a bigger version of the guy from Karate Kid II (Yuji Okumoto aka Chozen)!?
  • Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos) sighting (again)!
  • McGarrett needs to work on his shaka.
  • Mean twist killing off Koji!
  • Still waiting for my call to play an extra! πŸ˜›
  • Again… Alex O’Loughlin. Grace Park. Have at it! πŸ˜›

Hawaii Five-0: Hana `A`a Makehewa #H50

December 14, 2010

First off, big mahaloz to Chicken Grease, effenprincess and NeedaHobby for filling in (on short notice) last week with their guest posts! Your boy had to go on one business trip for Road Runner Mobile one quick one, so they chipped in and helped to keep our `ohana entertained up in hurr! Big ups!

I had CHOKE errands to do at home last night so I was finally able to sit down and watch an episode of Hawaii Five-0 in real time. And what better way to “watch” it than to join in on the #H50 convos going on simultaneously in the Twitterverse right?

Last night’s episode was called “Hana `A`a Makehewa“, which translates to Desperate Measures. Here’s the show’s synopsis:

“It’s Christmas in Hawaii, but instead of celebrating, Five-0 is negotiating a hostage situation when Victor Hesse, the man who killed McGarrett’s father, threatens to detonate an explosive that he’s strapped to Chin Ho’s chest.”

So wot? What’d you guys think?

Some possible talking points for us:

  • How sad was Danno’s Christmas tree? Hehe!
  • “Your house, your king’s English.” LOL!
  • Ikalani = Ihilani?
  • Chin Ho’s use of rice to pull the moisture off the SIM card. Gooooo @ricefest, er rice! 8)
  • Was that local MMA Fighter Harris Sarmiento in the chicken fight scene? First Niko Vitale and now him. Casting directors must be MMA fans! Sweet!
  • Danno’s hilarious quote, “Next time, shoot him in the face!”
  • Danno calling Sang Min (Will Yun Lee) the “Asian John Travolta”. LOL!
  • Since when was Bar 35 a private hostess bar in Nu`uanu?
  • Was that an Android app that they used to track Sang’s ankle tracker? DROID! πŸ˜›
  • Do coppers really have 28.5 mill just lying around like that in a secret asset forfeiture locker? If so, can somebody make me a copy of that blueprint please? 8)
  • I’ve swear we’ve all had a run in with a niele ol’ lady like that no!?
  • Wasn’t it just off hearing Chin Ho tell Kono “aloha” in that context? Didn’t care for that usage very much…
  • I almost cried seeing da $10 mill go bye bye in the fire. LOL!
  • Loved Na Leo reppin’ it with their Christmas song Kana Kaloka (Here Comes Santa Claus)!
  • How about another former local boy sighting with Mark Dacascos as the evil villain Wo Fat?
  • Alex O’Loughlin. Grace Park. That is all. πŸ˜›

In other news…

  • Finally catching up with my show The Sing-Off and watched back the first episode of this new season off my DVR. Woah! Committed’s rendition of Maroon 5’s “This Love” was off the chain!
  • Cliff Lee is heading back to my Phills son! Awwww yeah!
  • Any other Fantasy Football teams out there hurt this week by the Aaron Rodgers concussion dammit!?
  • Top Chef. That is all.

Hawaii 5 (and) 0!

November 30, 2010

As an avid University of Hawaii Warrior Men’s Basketball fan, I have been following former Advertiser sports reporter Dayton Morinaga’s new venture – WarriorInsider – with much interest.

When my Google Reader showed up last week with the title “Hawaii 5-0” in it, I skipped over everything else and went straight for the jugular. It was actually a clever play on words referring to both the Warriors’ hot 5 and 0 start (with wins over Montana State, Cal State Fullerton, Central Michigan, Central Arkansas, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff) and the popular CBS television show by the same name… Which, oh-by-the-way, happen to be two big interests of mine.

Usually our Tuesdays are reserved for Hawaii Five-0 chatter, but with last night’s episode being a rerun (already???), what better time to talk about the other 5-0 right?

Note: I don’t know Dayton personally (in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever even seen him in person), but I’ve heard a lot of good things about him. He has no idea I’m blogging about this today, but I’ve always liked his work, so I wanted to do my little part to support a fellow sports fan/journalist/(and now) blogging brutha. Gotta support da local businesses naw-mean?

Anyway, check out his web site: WarriorInsider.com and follow him on Twitter: @WarriorInsider. He’s doing some good stuffs for the UH sports community. Here’s one of the videos from the site that I particularly enjoyed. It’s a video introduction of the 2010-2011 roster… with the players appearing in numerical order! Awesomesauce!

2010-2011 UH Men’s Basketball Team Video Roster

Talk to me!
* Are you a UH Men’s Basketball fan too?
* What do you think of t heir hot start?
* What do you think of the WarriorInsider site?
* Have you been there before?
* Do you know Dayton Morinaga personally?
* Do you remember Dayton Morinaga’s work from his day’s at the ’tiser?
* Anything special to say to him?
* Interested in winning my tickets to a future game I can’t attend?
* Do you know why Hawaii Five-0 was a rerun already? So soon!
* Thoughts on the series so far?
* Thoughts on last night’s repeat episode?
* Alex O’Loughlin. Grace Park. No questions. Figured I’d get some feedback just by mentioning their names. πŸ˜›

Have a good Tuesday y’all!

Elephant, Heart & Soul, and Five-0 [VIDEOS]

November 23, 2010

These Tuesday posts are getting later and later yeah? Before you know it, da buggah goin’ run into our Where In Hawaii Wednesday post. Oh well, better late than never ah?

So I guess it’s obvious that I nevah watched Hawaii Five-0 live last night – hence the lack of a Five-0 post – but feel free to use the comment area below to chat up about the show with your fellow peeps anyway. I heard rap singer Nas made an appearance. Hah?

This weekend, I attended two events that had some killah live music and I wanted to post some videos I took to showcase the local talent we have here in Hawaii.

The first one is of a rock band called Elephant (who performs every Saturday from 9pm-2am at the Irish Rose Saloon in Waikiki). Lead man Kevin Jones is a talented DJ for Star 101.9FM, a better singer/rock star, and an even better friend. Check out Elephant performing a cover of Prince’s “When Doves Cry” below.

Elephant – “When Doves Cry”

The second band is called Heart & Soul, comprising of two talented ukulele players: Chris Salvador and my buddy Jody Kamisato. I recently featured Jody (and other fellow Kaiser High grads) in my November AroundHawaii article: “Cougar Pride – Three Kaiser High Grads Making a Difference“). Jody is the owner and head instructor at Ukulele Hale, and Chris is a young, but talented player with sick vocal skills. Below is a short clip of them covering Pure Heart’s “How Can I Get Over?” at their recent CD ReleaseΒ Celebration PartyΒ at Gordon Biersch at the Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Heart & Soul – “How Can I Get Over?”

Here’s a little bonus cut from one of my favorite Youtube singers, an obvious ode to John Tyner’s experience with the TSA. OMG Hilarious!

David Choi – “Please Don’t Touch My Junk”

Kay, das all. Have a good Tuesday yo! πŸ™‚

“Watching” Hawaii Five-0 Online (#H50)

November 16, 2010

So last night, I was finally home on a Monday night and able to catch Hawaii Five-0 live and in action in all its glory (as opposed to watching it off my DVR weeks later). With that, I thought I’d put a feeler out there to see if our WWE `Ohana is interested in a show not named Top Chef. πŸ˜› I know, I know… the post is shmall kine late in the day, and on a random/surprise Tuesday post, but we go see how it goes.

Talk to me!
* Do you watch Hawaii Five-0?
* How does it compare to the original?
* Do you watch it live or later off your DVR/TiVo/VCR?
* Favorite character and why?
* Ladies: Is Alex O’Loughlin as hot as everyone thinks he is?
* Fellas: Is Grace Park as hot as everyone thinks she is?
* Would you audition to be an extra on the show?
* Thoughts on how they’re doing with promoting Hawaii?
* Thoughts on their attempts at incorporating “bird” (pidgin) in the show?
* Thoughts on last night’s show?
* Any other positives/negatives you’d like to share?

BTW, if you’re on Twitter, try your hand at live tweeting, using the #H50 tag next week during the show. A bunch of Twitter/Five-0 geeks have been doing that since the first episode, and it has apparently been growing every week. I took my first stab at it last night, but it was a bit of info overload for me I think. Guess I’m getting old. LOL!

Shoooooots!

P.S. Go Bows! 8)

News Day Tuesday: Elect Bruno Five-0

September 21, 2010

Wow, lots of big Hawaii news as of late. From the election results, to Bruno Mars getting busted for cocaine, to the premiere of Hawaii Five-0. Thought it might be time to dust off “News Day Tuesday” for all y’all to sound off on some of these topics. Holla!

* Election Results?
– Pretty much went how I thought it would.

* Bruno Mars?
– Pretty disappointing. I was interesting in trying to line him up for an interview, but not so much anymore…

* Hawaii Five-0?
– I unfortunately had plans last night and missed it, but hope it does well for the sake of the state. Will definitely try to catch the next one.

* Top Chef?
– I know, I know, it’s not really Hawaii related and the season is already pau, but you guys always seem to wanna talk about it so hear ya go! LOL!

P.S. In case you missed it: Scenes from the Rice Fest! πŸ˜‰
P.P.S. Here’s Mars’ latest single: Just the Way You Are. Good shtuff nonetheless. πŸ˜›

Bruno Mars – “Just the Way You Are”
