Fave Friday – T-Shirt

October 9, 2009

Returning home from a recent trip, I was sporting my “No Worry Beef Curry” T-shirt. Upon deplaning, the flight attendant noticed it, pointed and smiled, almost in an approval kinda way. (Well, at least I think it was the shirt she was smiling at and not my beefcake body! Ahahaha! 😛 ).

ENeeeeewaaaay, the shirt was dug up from an old “Ed’s stuff” box at the ‘rents’ house during a recent garage sale and has become one of my favorites (again) as of late. As with errything, the incident above made me think of you guys and what might be of interest for this here blog community. So here it is.

In the comment area below, post what your favorite T-shirt is and why. (I was gonna ask you to “post your favorite local saying”, but I think we already did that one… kinda). Bonus points for posting your favorite sayings anyway. 😛 The shirt can be one you personally own, one you’ve seen, or one you were thinking of designing one day. 😉

I’ve got a several way tie for my fave tee:

* My “No Worry Beef Curry” t-shirt: for sentimental value (since I dug it up as a somewhat new discovery). Plus, it’s comfy and the color matches a lot of my shorts.
* My “Army” t-shirt: suuuuper comfy!
* My eS brand t-shirt: Um, helloooo!? ES, get it? ES!? 8)
* My “SPAM” t-shirt: no explanation necessary. 😉

And I guess I’ll use “No Worry Beef Curry” as my special bonus point saying. Woo hoo! 😛

So what say you?

Happy VHO7V Friday y’all! Have a great weekend and I’ll see ya next week! Happy Monday holiday for those of you who have the day off! 🙂

Fave Five Friday – Hawaii’s Worst Roads

September 4, 2009

Following up on last week’s fairly active topic of Hawaii’s Worst Parking Lots, let’s go with the next logical topic: Hawaii’s roads. I bet we’ve all got our strong opinions on this one eh?

So goh’on! Post your choices in the comment area below. Hurr’s mine!

  1. Anywhere on H1 during rush hour or when there’s an accident – Gaaaaaaah! I have no words.
  2. Piikoi Street – trying to catch this to get to Lunalilo Street to get on the H1 Westbound is B-A-N-A-N-A-S!
  3. Lunalilo Street– missing lights because of baboons blocking the intersection from Piikoi. D’oh!
  4. Kalanianaole Highway – not so much for the traffic, but because of the traffic lights. I remember when I used to make this drive to town and I counted the number of lights. It was insane (in the membrane). Like 20 or 30 something!
  5. Hana Highway– sending some love to the neighbor islands. 😛 This one only because it’s so windy (not the air kine windy) and crazy l’dat and when you get stuck behind one slow drivah… PAU!

While we’re on the topic of roads, who in the heck thought that that onramp off University Ave (eastbound) was a good idea!?!? First of all, in order to merge onto the H1, you have to go like 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. Plus there is an exit (University) right after your onramp. Bad planning I tell ya! I digress.

I know I’m missing a lot. Chime in below willya!?

Happy VHO7V Friday and have an awesome lonnnnnng weekend k? Shoots!

P.S. I know it’s a little late (I just download the pics), but mad props to local boy Brian Viloria (@BrianViloria) for successfully defending his IBF light-flyweight title by defeating Jesus Iribe by unanimous decision in a 12 round war. Check out the pic and action packed 12th round video below.

Fave Five Friday – Hawaii’s Worst Parking Lots

August 28, 2009

This one’s been on my “to do” list for quite some time, but I just never got a chance to get around to it. A recent visit to Mililani Shopping Center refreshed my memory.

We’ve all experienced it. Bad parking lots. Whether it be too few parking stalls (for the demand) or just plain poor architecture/engineering, some of Hawaii’s parking structures are pretty horrible and it’s time to call them out on it. Not necessarily to make them do anything about it, but more just to have a friendly monku session amongst family. 8) Y’all ready? Let’s do this!

  1. Pearl Kai – I have just 4 words: REE-DON-KU-LOUS!
  2. Hyatt Waikiki – this was suggested by a co-worker. Talk about narrow and dangerous. And on top of that parking is supah rare. Then again, it is Waikiki, so…
  3. Discovery Bay Center – recent trips to Bombay and Buffalo Wild Wings made me learn more about why I’m not very fond of this structure. The stalls are insanely packed (tight) together and at the weirdest angles. Not to mention, they share the lot with some rent a car place. Just weird.
  4. Mililani Shopping Center/Costco – there is like NEVER any parking here, which I guess is a good thing because bidness is going well. But still… I sometimes avoid going here because I know what the parking sitch is gonna be like. :
  5. Anywhere with dumb drivers– drivers who don’t know how to stay in their lines! Ho da irraz!

As I was putting this list together, I was like WTH!? These can’t be the worst. I know I’m missing some. Ah, I’m sure your lists will refresh my memory. Holla atcho boy!

Happy VHO7V Friday and have an awesome weekend k? Shoots!

Fave Five Friday – Celebrity Photo Opps

August 14, 2009

I’ve never been a fan of autographs. It’s too easy to forge, and, unless you can verify it and possibly even sell it for a premium, to me, it’s worthless. Celebrities are humans too. Some piece of paper with their chicken scratch on it doesn’t hold much weight. That’s just me.

But, as girly/kiddie as it sounds, what really gets me charged is getting a photo with said celeb. I value this the most because it has significance to me and me alone. I don’t care if it’s worthless to anyone else and ruined cause my ugly mug is in the photo, it’s just good kine fun and proof – in that particular moment in time – that I was there and actually met somebody I could tell a story about.

This past weekend in Philly, I had a blasty blast. Not only did I get that interview with Bruddah Shane, I was also able to sneak in some photo opps with “stars” from the MMA world, thanks to our awesome seats at UFC 101 the night before! Peeps like:

Cutman Jacob “Stitch” Duran

Which led me to this week’s Fave Five question. Which 5 celebs would you most like to have a photo with? If photos ain’t your bag, you can use autographs for your list.

  1. Flavor Flav – OMG! He’s so flamboyant and out there! This would be the funnest photo, like EVER! LOL!
  2. Mr. T – see above! Seems like a nice, humble guy too.
  3. Kimbo Slice – he’s crazy intense, but seems like a cool, mellow cat, outside the ring. I give him mad props for starting from scratch in the coming season of the Ultimate Fighter!
  4. Michael Jordan/Tiger Woods – gods in their respective games, though I’m not sure how good/genuine their personalities would be.
  5. Hugh Hefner – no words necessary! LOL!

I’m sure I’m missing a lot more, so lemme hear it. Send over your list of celebs you’d like to get a pic with/meet/get an autograph from.

Some celebs I forgot to mention were those that would bring the most cashola to my pocket (when sold to the tabloids). *grin* Maybe a scandalous shot with Jon or Kate, or both? Or Brangelina? Or even the Octo-mom? Is she even relevant anymore? 😛

Anyway, I digress. Have fun with this list on your T.G.I. Friday y’all!

Happy VHO7V Friday and have an awesome weekend k? Shoots!

(Editor’s note: Don’t get me wrong. I ain’t no celebrity stalker/groupie type, as the pictures above may make it seem. LOL! If I had to stand in line and wait a couple hours for one photo, I wouldn’t do it. These just so happen to fall into place a-ight? 😛 )

Fave Five Friday – Poke Locations

August 7, 2009

If you said “Tantalus” or “ma’s house”, you’re a perv! Getcho mind outta the gutter yo. 😛 I’m actually referring to the raw seafood mixture that so many of us love with our beer, er meal. Poke, NOT poke. Getum? 😉

In any case, I was thinking of putting together a “Poke around Hawaii” type of piece for AroundHawaii.com, like I did for Shave Ice, Pho, and Acai (part I and part II), and I wanted to get your guys’ help. Post some of your favorite poke around Hawaii and where it’s from and I’ll target the hostpots that get the most action. 🙂 For now, check out my Fave Five list!

  1. Masago Ahi from Yama’s Fish Market – YUMMMMM!
  2. Anything from Tamashiro Market! – just hard to find parking sometimes.
  3. Clam Poke from Costco – hooooo! surprisingly ono for something from Costco!
  4. Limu Ahi from Safeway – OK, I’m a bit biased ’cause I used to make it, but the recipe is some ono. And they only use fresh ahi, not frozen!
  5. Creamy Ahi from Poke Stop – I remember it being better before.

I heard good things about Ono Seafood in Kapahulu, JJ Seafood in Kaneohe, Fresh Catch in Kaimuki and Golden Mart in Mililani. Any recommendations for what to try there, or anywhere else? Holla atcho boy!

P.S. Wish me luck with the Victorino interview! Still crossin’ my fingers… : If you order the UFC 101 (Penn vs. Florian) fight on Oceanic Time Warner Cable PPV, look for us on TV k!? 8)

Happy VHO7V Friday and have an awesome weekend y’all! 🙂

Fave Five Friday – Music Groups

July 24, 2009

My co-worker was laughing at me the other day when I told her that I’m really into Rockapella. Some also find it hard to believe that I dig on country music. What other secrets can we pull outta me? We shall see. But not without y’all sharin’ too!

  1. Flo Rida or Twista – there’s just somethin’ about Flo Rida’s beat that makes me wanna get up and dance. Twista’s flow is insane! Respect.
  2. Jason Mraz – cool cat with mellow, catchy grooves. Seeing that he’s a genuinely sincere/nice person when we met him at the Road Runner Music Hall just solidified my respect and admiration for him.
  3. Colbie Caillat – kinda da kine for me to admit this, but sistah’s got some good kine jams. I like that she’s from Hawaii and that she seems to still be grounded after all of her success. Trying to line up an interview with her one of these months. Wish me luck!
  4. Rockapella – can’t think of any other a capella group as talented as these bruthas! I need them to redo their lyrics to “Where In the World is Carmen Sandiego?” and sing “Where In Hawaii Is Edward Sugimoto?”! 😛
  5. O.A.R. – My alt rock ear gets its fill with this group. Love the brass infusion! 8)

How about the local acts?

  1. Ekolu – Lukela Keala’s voice is a thing of beauty!
  2. Koa ‘Uka – ultimate party song band. Makes me wanna skank. I still wanna see them in person.
  3. Justin Young – soulful voice with a laid-back, humble personality. Deservedly goin’ places now that he’s rollin’ with sistah Colbie.
  4. Na Leo – spine-tingling harmonies, memory inducing hits. Don’t get no bettah.
  5. Fiji – his live appearances are like no other! He knows how to get a crowd going fo sho!

Share your fave groups below yo!

P.S. Wish me luck in the Tinman this Sunday y’all! 🙂 The bummahz part is that we play the Advertiser that night in our Media Basketball league and my legs will be shot. D’oh! If we lose, I won’t hear the end of it from Queenie, WesNaks and Bruddah Kwon (and maybe even StevieT! 8) ) LOL!

Happy VHO7V Friday y’all! Have a good weekend and I’ll see y’all on Monday! 🙂

Fave Five Friday: Phobias

July 17, 2009

Yeah, OK, so “Phobias” do not exactly constitute a “Fave” Five list, but you know what I mean right? 8)

This one was actually suggested by wifey, after coming eye to eye with a friendly widdle cockroach – something she’s DEATHLY afraid of – at a restaurant.

Since I’m such a manly man (*grunt* *snort*), coming up with a list of things I’m afraid of will not be easy. *grin* But seriously, for those having trouble wid dis, try herehere or here (some of ’em are HILARIOUS!). OK, let’s do this thang!

My Phobias yo:

  1. Kakorrhaphiophobia (defeat) or Atychiphobia (failure) – Hate to lose. Nuff said.
  2. Agoraphobia (crowded public places) – not really a phobia, but more of a peeve. Don’t like things/people crowding me. Personal space people. 😉
  3. Thanatophobia (death/dying) – who isn’t afraid of dying?
  4. Trypanophobia/Aichmophobia/Belonephobia (needles) – not really scared of um, but I’d rather not have to have um in me. 😉
  5. Phalacrophobia (becoming bald) – kinda funny, but serious. Hehe!

Is there such a thing as PublicToiletSeatphobia? If so, I got it! 8)

Some amusing ones I found:

  1. Caligynephobia (beautiful women) – poor guy
  2. Kolpophobia (female genitals) – no comment
  3. Japanophobia (Japanese or Japanese culture) – Ahahaha!
  4. Gamophobia (marriage) – could be blamed for some long engagements?
  5. Gymnophobia (nudity) – craziness! Playboy would go broke!
  6. Didaskaleinophobia (school, going to school) – Dammit! I could’ve used this back in the day! 8)
  7. Genophobia (sex) – is you serious?
  8. Cacophobia (ugliness) – Bwahahahahahaha!

I really shouldn’t be laughing though cause these could be very serious fears for people. :

Happy VHO7V Friday y’all and have a good weekend a-ight? Shoots!

Fave Five Friday: Reality Show Couples

June 26, 2009

So it was recently reported that Jon and Kate Gosselin have filed for divorce. Gee, who saw that one coming?

Along those lines, we’ll go with that theme for this week’s Fave Five blog: Fave Five Reality Show Couples. I needs ta be honest though. I’m more excited to fill out the least fave list. Let’s see what we come up with shall we?

Fave Five Reality Show Couples:

  1. Flavor Flav + Anyone– you gotsta love his passion and honesty for trying to find true love on “Flavor of Love.” And, although he’s admirably decided to stay with his baby’s mama following the 3rd and last season, a part of me still wants him to keep going. Can’t get enough of that guy man! LOL!
  2. Travis Barker + Shanna Moakler – although they’ve had a lot of drama following them in the news, I was a fan of their show “Meet the Barkers” back in the day.
  3. Nick Lachey + Jessica Simpson – how can you not like both of them? They seemed to be nice peoples, at least individually… Maybe their life timing was just not right? I secretly wouldn’t mind seeing them get back together and film another season of “Newlyweds”. 8)
  4. New York + Tailor Made – I don’t really like Tailor Made, but he and New York (Tiffany Pollard) were like the most unlikely of couples, so “I Love New York” was just fun to watch. Like a train wreck I couldn’t look away from. 😛
  5. Jeff Conaway + Vikki Lizzi – one word: dysfunctional. Not sure why I wasted hours of my life watching “Celebrity Rehab” but they were also fun/ridiculous to watch.

Bottom Five Reality Show Couples:

  1. Spencer Pratt + Heidi Montag – these two are number 1 on the hated list and won’t ever get overtaken. Why does anyone even care what they’re up to? I have no clue. Gotta hand it to Spencer for his decent marketing skills though.
  2. Jon Gosselin + Kate Gosselin – again… who cares!?
  3. Britney Spears and Kevin Federline – ditto
  4. Christopher Knight + Adrianne Curry – again…
  5. Audrina and Justin-Bobby – need I say more?

If making your list proves too challenging, feel free to just dish/vent about any of the above (or others you love/despise).

Fave Five Friday: Talk Shows

June 19, 2009

Now that my man CoCo (Conan O’Brien) has successfully gone a good couple weeks as Jay Leno’s successor on the Tonight Show (as expected), there’s no bettah time than now to do this Fave Five Friday Survey: Favorite Talk Shows no?

Hurr’s mine. What’s yours?

  1. The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien – it has always been one of my dreams/goals to go to New York and watch Conan’s Late Night show live (and catch a Yankees/Mets game). Now that he’s in L.A., it’s that much easier to check it out. Hurr I come CoCo! LOL!
  2. Jimmy Kimmel Live – hilarious guy with good/different/interesting guests.
  3. The Ellen DeGeneres Show – funny host with good/interesting guests.
  4. The Arsenio Hall Show – Yeah, I know it’s no longer on the air, but DAYEM, this show was the bomb back in the day! 8)
  5. Da Ali G Show – Yeah, not a real talk show, and not really on the air anymore either, but this was a CLASSIC show waaaay before Borat went mainstream!

Honorable mentions go to Late Show with David Letterman, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Chelsea Lately, The Colbert Report, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Andy Bumatai Show, and The Best Damn Sports Show Period. What you got?

Happy VHO7V Friday y’all! Have a good weekend and I’ll see y’all on Monday! 🙂

Fave Five Friday: Pizza

May 29, 2009

Last weekend, wifey, BIL, BIL’s gf and I were trying to figure out where to grind. The thought of trying a unique/tasty pizza came up but, for the life of me, I couldn’t think of any besides the usual suspects. This one’s for those of you who will be in a similar predicament in the future. You’re welcome. 😛

So here’s my list of favorite pizzas in Hawaii:

  1. Brick Oven Pizza (Kalaheo, Kauai) – every trip to Kauai HAS TO include Brick Oven fo sho!
  2. California Pizza Kitchen – they have a lot of winnahz, but one of my favorites is probably the Original BBQ Chicken one (sans the onions).
  3. La Pizza Rina – I love those little 8 inchers.
  4. Domino’s Pizza – makes me reminisce to the days when pops – only on special occasions – used to treat us to Domino’s Pizza (he was/is a health freak!)
  5. Round Table Pizza – I’ve never tried it before, but BIL seems to swear by it, so I’m curious. 😛

Yeah, I know, not very interesting, but I’m not much of a pizza connoisseur. Teach me a lil’ sumthin’ sumthin’ will ya? 🙂

Happy VHO7V Friday y’all! Have a good weekend and I’ll see y’all on Monday! 🙂

P.S. Wish me luck with BJ Penn this weekend!
