Flashback Friday: Sayings

April 17, 2009

This one is inspired by the hilarious comments many of you leave at the bottom on these blogs. Mad props!

Several weeks ago, uji busted out “Yes No Maybe so” and I just had to crack up.

I don’t know about you, but these sayings from yesteryear make me all misty-eyed nostalgic and think back to a time of carefree living. No work, no life pressures, just fun times, naw-mean? Good kine times when the only pressure you had was figuring out who you were going to bless who you were going beg to go with you to the prom. 😛

What’s even cooler is that we in Hawaii have this unique culture that makes our words, language and sayings very colloquial in nature. We’ve got sayings that only we know and can relate to. Yeah?

So hurr’s the dealio. Post one local kine saying, with your best interpretation of the definition or usage during your hanabattah days. Include a funny story if you like. Sayings like: No Ack, Like Beef, Handles Randall, Make A, She go, etc., you know. Need help, check For bonus points, if you have more then one, post them separately to artificially boost the comment count. LOL! I’ll go first.

* Make A – Embarrassing, make a fool of one’s self. Make @$$. Usually used in my days to refer to a dude “making A” in front of a girl.

K, your turn… brah!

Talk to me!
* Post your favorite saying(s) below.
* Post your least favorite saying(s) below.
* WWE is turning 1 later this month! Any suggestions on what to write about that day? 🙂
* Don’t forget to have a Happy Aloha VH07V Friday today and fun weekend y’all!

Custom Plates?

April 16, 2009

On my drive home the other day, I saw a custom license plate that said “ForMom”. Ok, so it didn’t really say “ForMom” but since I’m about to tease this person, I’d rather not embarrass ’em too much. 8)

What are your thoughts on a custom plate that says something like “To ____” or “For ___”? Personally, I think it’s great. It shows effort. It shows thoughtfulness. It shows that special someone that you really care about them.

But what about that special someone you actually bought the car for? So shame!

The novelty and impact of the plate is pretty much pau the very second after the gift is given ain’t it? Yet, they still have to drive around with that thang for the rest of the car’s existence.

You can’t exactly go and trade it in for a “regular” license plate. That’s like a slap in the face to the person who bought you the dope G-ride. So you’re stuck driving around a car that people assume you couldn’t afford yourself. Lose money!

It did get me a thinkin’ though. WWJD WWWWEOD? LOL! That’s the worst acronym ever. It’s “What Would the World Wide Ed Ohana Do” for those who don’t have ESP. So… what it is? WWWWEOD? 😛

Talk to me!
* What custom plate(s) would you get and why? (6 character limit)
* Already got one? Share!
* What are some good ones you’ve seen on the road?

I once saw one that said “WWW”. I was jealous! Ha! Then I thought… do I really want people to easily identify me by my plates, right after I “accidentally” cut them off? 😛

P.S. Here’s the City’s site to search and apply for your own Personalized Plates.

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – April 15, 2009

April 15, 2009

NeedaHobby took her first one home after correctly guessing “airport” in last week’s contest! Not bad for something that looked like “chocolate chip cheesecake” (according to snow)! 😛 Please help me congratulate sistah Hobbz!

A-ight, I’m gonna make this a lil’ easier for all y’all this week. The shot is wider and shows a lot more, but I’ll also guess that for this one, you’ll recognize the area, but won’t be able to come up with the words to describe it. Muhahaha. Nah, knowing you smaht buggahs, you probably will anyway. I think I’m less tricky than I thank.

Ready, set, GUESS!

Never Judge a Book By Its Cover

April 14, 2009

Here’s what’s hot on the web right now: a shocking video of Susan Boyle and her Britain’s Got Talent performance. Props to kuya.d for the link.

OK, no more words. Just watch the video and I’ll meetcha at the bottom.

If the volume is too low, click here for the official version ( (I know, I know, it wouldn’t let me embed the official version)

What’d you think? Pretty touching eh? If I weren’t such a robot, I probably would’ve shed a tear or two. 😉

Talk to me!
* What did you think?
* Did you cry?
* Did it teach you the valuable “Never Judge a Book By Its Cover” life lesson? 8)
* Have you ever judged a book by its cover and got surprised in your own life?
* When people judge you before really knowing you, are you motivated to prove them wrong?

In the news
* Longtime Phillies announcer Harry Kalas dies at 73 (as first reported yesterday by MakiSushi)
* Mel Gibson’s Wife Files for Divorce
* Phil Spector found guilty of 2nd-degree murder
* Former pitcher Mark ‘the Bird’ Fidrych dies at 54
* Adult film star Marilyn Chambers dies at 56
* Hannah Montana earns $32M at box-office

Fun Day Monday: Beggin’

April 13, 2009

Hooooooo! kuya.d‘s guest post on Friday gots 50+ comments and counting. Plus he got a few more peeps to come out of hiding (lurking) too. I’m impressed. Maybe he should write all the time! LOL!

Unfortunately, you’re back stuck with me again this week. Too bad, so sad. 😛 Since it’s a Mondizzay, let’s cheer errrone up with a funny pic forwarded to me by a friend. The title is “How Bad Is the Economy” and the caption is even funnier. Check it!

How Bad Is the Economy - Cat's are SO dramatic
Cats are SO dramatic

Talk to me!
* Hypothetical situation time: if you had to beg for money, how would you do it? What would your sign say? Where in Hawaii would you do it? What special “talent” would you perform to “earn” your cash money?
– I’d write an honest note, but keep it short and sweet. Something “Please give me a job. I work hard, l’dat.” I figgah there’s not much time for the peeps to read a novel on my 10″x10″ cardboard while whizzing by me. And I’d probably hang in the Kahala area. I’m guessing they’ll be nice and help a brutha out. 8)
* A-ight weekend wrap-up time. I enjoyed a lunch in downtown, celebrated the sale of our car with a dinner (and Asahi) at Tokkuri-Tei, had a family brunch at Legend Restaurant in Chinatown, hit and played catch with wifey and the BIL, and had a nice Easter BBQ. What did all y’all do?

Happy Monday yo. Hang in there. We’ll stick together and make the week go by faster k? 🙂

Prom Songs

April 10, 2009

Since I’m off being unproductive today 😛 , hurr’s a combo Fave 5 / Flashback Friday post from our beloved kuya.d. Show him some love y’all!

Chee-hoo! And aloha WWE ‘ohana! I’m not sure if Ed made a good decision, but you lucky buggahs (or poor things) have me, kuya.d, sitting in for the vacay man today. Thanks for the honor Bruddah Ed!

So let’s jump in the ole way-back machine, and give a nod to prom. Yeah, it’s prom season, so let’s do it this way: list your Fave 5 songs from your prom days (fast songs, love songs, any song that takes you back!).

And I’ll also start us off on our favorite “name that tune” sing-along. So join in!

I know today’s Good Friday so I do wish you all a nice one. Some of you don’t have work, but I’m still hoping for some responses since some folks still have to represent on the time clock.

My prom songs Fave 5:
1) “Lost in Love” – New Edition (they were my favorite group until Boyz II Men came out).
2) “About You” – C&K (even the kids now listen to this song, true island classic).
3) “The Search is Over” – Survivor (didn’t I hear this on Idol the other nite?).
4) “Supersonic” – JJ Fadd (this or rock, rock Planet Rock, or give-give-give Give it All You Got).
5) “I Would Die 4 You” – Prince (go ahead, throw in that Purple Rain DVD, I know ya wanna).

. . . I’ve been waiting for so long, now I finally found someone to stand by me . . . (continue on from here folks)!

By the way, Have a blessed Easter! And Ed will be back Monday, mucho mahalos!

Survey Thursday – Email?

April 9, 2009

Back in the glory days of the web, us peeps with email addresses were few and far between. As students, we  were hooked up with one by default (with an ugly suffix), but that was back when we had to log into a UNIX shell and check it via a program called Pine. Good lord! uhunix? Pine!? I’m choking myself up with all the memories! LOL!

Nowadays, every Bill, Sergey, and Jerry Tom, Dick and Harry has an email account from such free services as Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo! Heck, even my momma has not one, but three that is checked on the regular. ISPs like us, offer accounts as part of our services: up to 10 accounts per Road Runner customer (via the sexy domain 😛 ) to be exact.

Whereas this question would’ve been “Do you have an email account?” in a past WWE column in the Ka Leo, today, I gotsta up my game and stay current with what’s happening on the world wide interwebs. Errrbody pretty much has email. It’s just a matter of provider. With that said…

* Which service do you use for email and why?

I’m a Gmailer fo sho. Their flexibility with forwarding, filtering, sorting, account management, header privacy, etc. is off the chain! There’s no comparison. And I didn’t even mention the searching aspect! Plus my account ties in nicely to the billion other Google “products” I use. I honestly don’t know how/if I’d survive without my Gmail and Google Calendar. Scary!

K, your turn! Share, share!

Have a good weekend y’all! Das right! I get tomorrow off. Wahoooooooo!

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – April 8, 2009

April 8, 2009

Last week, miLL-viLLe stayed up late and correctly guessed Spaghetti Factory! Guess the Parmesan cheese and weird light fixtures gave it away eh?

So this week’s one won’t be so easy gang… at least I think. It’s another zoomed in, cropped out shot that could be anywhere in the world Hawaii yo!

Nuff talk? Fine! Go getum cuz!

Use Caution When Dialing Certain Area Codes

April 7, 2009

It’s News Day Tuesday, so here’s another in the series of WWE edumacation. This one’s on Area Code (dialing) safety. Yeah, I know, I know… these aren’t so popular in the comments department, but as long as I can help a handful of you peeps out with some of these, I’m satisfied.

Do Not DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284, AND 876

This is very important information provided to us by AT&T. Don’t ever dial area code 809.

This one is being distributed all over the U.S. This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call.

Be sure you read this and pass it on.

They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc.

In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away… Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.

If you call from the U.S., you will apparently be charged $2425 per-minute.

Or, you’ll get a long recorded message. The point is they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges.

The 809 area code is located in the Dominican Republic. The charges afterward can become a real nightmare. That’s because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You’ll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.

Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam.

Talk to me!
* Sneaky yeah?
* How about unc uji UNC Tarheels yesterday? Pretty dominating eh?
