Royal Hawaiian Center Launches TWC WiFi Service

January 23, 2014

Thanks to a recent deployment of Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s TWC WiFi service – the largest of its kind in Waikiki – Royal Hawaiian Center guests are now able to shop, dine, and relax with the added convenience of free WiFi access.

“Previously, free WiFi was available only in the Center’s Pā`ina Lāna`i Food Court”, according to Royal Hawaiian Center general manager Marleen `Ākau, “but now our mainland and international visitors as well as our local resident customers can surf the Internet at lightning-fast speeds on the upper levels within all three blocks of Royal Hawaiian Center, along Kalākaua Avenue”.

To celebrate, Oceanic Time Warner Cable, in association with Royal Hawaiian Center, held a WiFi launch event last week which included a dine around with local celebrities, members of the media, and Time Warner Cable executives. Below are some scenes from the night.

Hawaii Officially Launches TWC WiFi

September 19, 2013

At an event at the University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center last week, Oceanic Time Warner Cable officially announced that the company has begun deployment of TWC WiFi™, a statewide WiFi Hotspot network for its customers. Access to the TWC WiFi network is free to Oceanic Time Warner Cable customers with Standard Internet or above and to Oceanic Time Warner Cable Business Class Internet customers.

“Increasingly, our Hawaii customers want to take their high-speed Internet with them out of the home and on-the-go,” said Oceanic President Bob Barlow. “The TWC WiFi network we’re building for Hawaii will allow our customers to greatly maximize their TWC Internet subscription – at no additional charge.”

On Oahu, customers can access over 400 TWC WiFi Hotspots with hundreds more coming in 2013 as Oceanic Time Warner Cable builds out the network. TWC WiFi will be introduced at popular locations where residents eat, live and play. Recent additions are Sunset Beach, Kailua District Park and the Stan Sheriff Center. Below are some scenes from the night.

Weekly VH07V T-Shirt Update!

Since I had such a blast at last month’s Hawaii Ocean Expo, I decided to try and kill myself again by doing it all over at yet another expo. 😛 If you’re free, come on down to the Big Boys & MMA Hawaii Expo on June 15, 16 and 17 at the Blaisdell and say hi! I’ll have even more VH07V (New Products) by then!

This week’s “Spotted” shot for VH07V was submitted by my buddy Thomas Yamada, who runs nvrMT Promotions out of Seattle. He was able to get a shot with local recording artist J Boog before the concert he helped put on.

My new blog for Time Warner Cable’s corporate blog called Untangled also went live yesterday. Hawaii Student Matthew Shimura Takes Top Honors in National Competition

May 1, 2012

Oceanic Time Warner Cable is proud to announce that the grand prize winning entry for C-SPAN’s national 2012 StudentCam competition is a student from Hawaii!

Hawaii Student Matthew Shimura Takes Top Honors in National Competition
Matthew Shimura – StudentCam 2012 Grand Prize Winner [Photo courtesy: Kiman Wong]

The national competition, sponsored by Time Warner Cable and C-SPAN, challenged middle and high school students to bring the U.S. Constitution to life in the form of a video documentary. Students were asked to examine any section of the Preamble, Articles or Amendments of the U.S. Constitution and discuss its relevance in their lives, with the opportunity to win part of more than $50,000 in cash and in-kind prizes. More than 1,203 films were received in this year’s competition from more than 2,000 students from 43 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.

Of the 148 student finalists from across the United States who won prizes, Matthew Shimura, a ninth grader from Punahou School here in Honolulu, won the grand prize with his documentary video entry titled: “The Constitution and the Camps: Due Process and the Japanese-American Internment.”

The Constitution and the Camps: Due Process and the Japanese-American Internment

Through his remarkable exploration of American policy towards Japanese-Americans during World War II, Shimura took viewers on a journey that presents the history of Japanese internment camps in the United States. He focused on his uncle John, a former prisoner at the infamous Manzanar camp in California, as an example of someone who was able to overcome harsh realities and achieve the American Dream.

As the grand prize winner, Shimura won a trip to Washington D.C., a $5,000 scholarship award, as well as $1,000 in funding for his school to spend on digital video equipment supplies.

Oceanic Time Warner Cable recently honored Shimura and his family at an awards reception held at Punahou School, his Alma Matter.

Scenes from the Rice Fest

September 20, 2010

(Warning: *CHOKE* Photos)

Yeah, I know. Dis post is more than a week overdue, but bruddah ova hea had to sift through 635 photos from all ova da creation (Twitter/Twitpic, flickr, Facebook, etc.) from like 20 different peeps. Finally whittled it down to a little over a hunny in the hopes of giving you a little glimpse into the event that absolutely consumed my life for the last year or so.

For those who don’t know, I am the co-founder of an event called Rice Fest , an event that I am very passionate about, and one that I can honestly say Hawaii wants/needs. Let’s face it. We love our rice here in Hawaii. The plan is to put the Rice Fest on every September (in line with National Rice Month), which we started at our inaugural event last week Saturday (September 11, 2010) at the Waterfront at Aloha Tower Marketplace. Below are the scenes from that day. Mahalo to everyone for the support!

Stephen aka @PHOTOluluTV won free rice and quickly donated it to our non-profit partner Lanakila Pacific. So thoughtful!

Still early in the day, I had some down time to visit each booth to capture the sights.

Due to a tent mix-up, the ladies of the 58th Cherry Blossom Festival Court were out in the hot sun for part of the day. A big mahalo to all of them for being such troopers!

Also in the Keiki Zone, University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Department of Human Nutrition, Food, and Animal Science educator Dr. Maria Stewart shared her current research in an interactive and educational display entitled “Nutrition for Everybody: Learn How Rice Promotes a Healthy Body”.

Scenes from the IntelliGo Launch Party!

August 3, 2010

Late yesterday afternoon, my homey at the Star-Advertiser asked me if I had a blog ready to go for today as they were planning on posting my mug in the print version of the paper again. Apparently, the demand to see my face again was that overwhelming.

CHEEYEAHRIGHT!

I wish. But yeah, a fella can dream right?

Regardless, bruddah ovah hea had to be ready with a blog, so I did what any red-blooded American would do in a crisis situation. Cry.

After wiping away my tears, I was able to regroup and figure out what I was going to blog about…

Last week Thursday, Oceanic Time Warner Cable and Road Runner Mobile held their Official IntelliGo Launch Party – at the Road Runner Music Hall – to introduce their newest wireless product to the public: The IntelliGo. The IntelliGo is their shiny/sparkly wireless device that acts as a personal mobile hotspot, providing a WiFi signal for up to 5 of your friends. (Click here for more info about the IntelliGo).

Various members of the media (both traditional and social media), current customers, contest winners, etc. were invited to this exclusive event which included free giveaways, ono kine grindz, and live entertainment from two killer local bands: Busekrus and Elephant! Check out the scenes and commentary below!

Sixty bags of goodies went just like that! Apologies to the late comers who weren’t able to score one! 😦

Big Mahalo to Lanakila Pacific’s Xpress Chefs for doing an amazing job with the eats! Based on what I was hearing, the Stuffed Mushroom Caps were probably the biggest hit of the night. 🙂

Then it was time for the second band to take the stage: Elephant. Wow! Lead singer Kevin Jones (who, oh-by-the-way, is also a Star 101.9 personality) has gots some serious pipes!

A big Mahalo to Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s VP of Marketing Alan Pollock and Road Runner Mobile’s Wireless Director Kiman Wong for helping to make this event a possibility. Big ups to James Avis and Kevin Jones of Clear Channel Communications for the support, as always, and to Caroline Witherspoon and Malia Chung (and Marichris Diga) of Becker Communications for your media support as well. A special thanks to all of our guests spanning the local community… from our current Road Runner Mobile customers, to Hawaii’s social media leaders like @Bytemarks @DigitalSignGuy @HawaiiRealty @johngarcia @ktpoy @Mel808 @Melissa808 @ParkRat @peterkay and @ryankanno. Much love everyone!

Columnists’ Holiday Party at the Road Runner Music Hall

November 11, 2008

PSYCHE!

With a whoppin’ 7 comments on yesterday’s post (2 of which were mine!), I decided to postpone the oh so popular wedding related posts to next week (while I’m on vacation). That way, I won’t have to be in front of a computer when I cry my eyes out at the lack of comments. Haha! I keed. But seriously, let’s get back to some hard core postin’ shall we?

On Friday, we had our annual, holiday get-together with our hard workin’ AroundHawaii columnists. I always look forward to these, as I get to meet and see the faces of the eclectic bunch that I usually only communicate with via email throughout the year. This year, our attending experts, spanning such topics as surf (Sean & Lane Davey and Dean Luke), computing (Yasuo Ogawa and Kiman Wong), recipes (Liz Rizzo), golf (Danielle Tucker), real estate (Joe Segal), jewelry (Russell Oshita), finance (Jon Yamasato), local food (Grant Kawasaki), Las Vegas (Kimo Akane), style (Cathy Lee), parenting (Diane Ako), and travel (Claus Hansen), enjoyed the festivities at the Road Runner Music Hall, an amazing facility put together by the folks at Clear Channel Communications.

The prizes were compliments of Oceanic Time Warner Cable, the delicious food was catered both by Creations In Catering and the gang at Clear Channel Communications, and the entertainment was by a new group called Onward. The lead singer’s voice (Chad?) was pretty killah! Here are some scenes from the night (mahalo to Kiman Wong for the shots!)!

* Mahalo to Charmaine and the gang at Creations In Catering for putting together an amazing menu for my peeps.
* Mahalo to the man Kevin Jones and the rest of the staffers at Clear Channel Communications, for helping to coordinate such a successful night!
* Mahalo to the killah reggae band Onward. You guys were awesome!
* Mahalo to Gwen, Maribel, Kiman, Alan, Noreen, Matt and everyone else at Oceanic Time Warner Cable, for helping to make this night possible!

I feel like I just won an Emmy or somethin’!
