As you can tell by the above, I’m a bit excited. This may actually be the first time that a WIH post landed on Halloween. You guys got big plans?
No Halloween parties for me these days. Getting old already. LOL! For the first time in my life, I will actually be going Trick or Treating around the neighborhood… as a parent! Crazy right? A bunch of us neighborhood friends (all new parents) will be taking the keiki around the ‘hood for some treats. Mellow kine, but should be fun seeing the expression on the kids’ faces.

This week’s “Spotted” shot for VH07V features a video from Canadian Youtuber Jason Johnston, who has a unique (and inspiring) story himself. Jay and his wife visited Hawaii years ago and completely fell in love with the islands. At the age of 35, after hitting rock bottom (in debt, overweight, injured & unemployed), he embarked on a 5 year plan of attempting to change his life and move to Hawaii for a period of 1 year (watch his intro video). His plan, appropriately named Hawaii Four-0 (for when he turns 40 years old), has gained a steady following on Youtube and is a great inspiration for many of us to aspire to.
Jay first reached out to me via the VH07V Facebook page inquiring about ordering some stuff. I guess, because of his love for Hawaii, it just spoke to him. Since then, we’ve been messaging each other back and forth, even planning on a night with some beers once he gets here. He’s a really nice guy and you can’t help but root for him and his goal. The video below is his latest, where he talks about the gear I sent him and about being featured on fellow social medialite “@AlohaBruce” Fisher’s web site: Hawaii-Aloha.com.

* My friend’s mini craft fair at Koko Head Elementary last Sunday actually went a lot better than I had anticipated. I only brought one item per color/option and within the first hour was out of many things. Sorry to those who wanted things I was missing. I’ll catch ya later.
* Still undecided on whether or not I should get a booth at the Islandwide Crafts & Food Expo taking place on the Black Friday weekend from Nov 23-25. I might want to concentrate more on the Christmas rush and finally setting up that online shopping cart.
* Speaking of which, I’ve been able to make a little progress on setting up the online shopping site for VH07V. Will hopefully have more to report soon!

This week’s “Spotted” shot for VH07V features a group shot taken at this past weekend’s Food & New Products Show. VH07V had an amazing weekend and did better here than any other show previously. * On Sunday, my friend Shari Lau Yoshinaga and her “Team VH07V” team participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at Kapiolani Park. Along with VH07V’s humble donation, she was able to raise $1,353.10 for the foundation, placing #14 out of 299 teams! Amazing job Shari! What a hero! Below are a few pics from that day. * Pretty much set for the mini craft fair this Sunday at Koko Head Elementary School’s Cafeteria. My friends Kari and Julie are setting it up so we’ll have an area there for a few hours if you want to stop by and pick up some VH07V merch.

On Monday morning, Rice Fest received huge, national coverage from the Today Show when they covered both our Guinness World Record breaking attempt for the world’s Largest SPAM Musubi and our SPAM Musubi eating contest. In the piece, our back-to-back defending champion “Uncle Rodney” wore his Red/Gold VH07V tee and got SPOTTED! in the national story. Kinda cool yeah?
Speaking of Rice Fest, I just gotsta take the time to briefly send a big shoutout to my friends who supported me and not only performed at Rice Fest, but also, to my surprise, wore their VH07V shirts. It really warms the heart of a brutha to get such support.

For the last three years, I have participated in a program called “The Good Table”, an island-wide dining event in which tables are purchased at various restaurants across Oahu by groups or individuals who are then treated to a unique and custom dining experience. Proceeds from the sales of these tables go to Lanakila Meals on Wheels, Hawaii’s largest and only island-wide meal service for seniors.
Although it is too late to purchase tables for this year, here’s a little video that I encourage you to watch to perhaps inspire you to consider purchasing a table for next year.

This year’s Rice Fest will be held THIS Saturday, September 29th from 11am-7pm at Ward Warehouse! There will be cooking demonstrations from Chef Mavro of Chef Mavro Restaurant and his partners Stephanie Lum and Shawn Ching of Hawaii News Now, and Grant Kawasaki of Hawaiian Grown TV & Hawaiian Grown Kitchen and his partner Justin Cruz from KHON2, Santa Miyoshi of Tokkuri Tei defending his “Riceipe” contest belt, live entertainment by Jody Kamisato & ‘Uke’s Rising Stars and Jon Yamasato, and taiko drumming from Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii, our 3rd annual SPAM Musubi eating contest, and our attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s Largest SPAM Musubi! Don’t forget to also bring your brown rice or monetary donations for our beneficiary Lanakila Meals on Wheels. Can’t wait! See you there…

The one on the top will hopefully be ready just in time for football season 8) , while the one on the bottom is a colorway I thought might work well for my friend who is involved with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure walk. While they can use it as a fundraiser for their team, for any sales I personally make, I could also donate part of the proceeds back to the foundation. Here’s a neat find. For those Auction Hunters/Storage Wars/Storage Hunters-type reality show fans out there, there will be a real life version of that happening right here in Hawaii. Locally-owned and operated Hawaii Self Storage will be holding a Storage Auction at their Salt Lake location (808 Ahua Street), with bids starting as low as $10! Check out the fun on Thursday, August 30th at 10am (with registration by 9am)!

More on the details of the day’s activities, but you can be sure that we’ll have the best rice-oriented food booths, cooking demonstrations, the SPAM musubi eating contest, and the breaking of the Guinness World Record for Largest SPAM musubi… Again! Hope to see y’all there!

For this week’s “Spotted“, we got another video sighting of VH07V. Real estate extraordinaire, island entertainer, and all around nice guy Jon Yamasato recently wore his Blue/White Logo VH07V shirt on his popular HI*Sessions Youtube show. Check that entire Youtube channel out! Awesome resource for local Hawaiian music!
* Ever since columnist Alana Folen covered VH07V in last week’s MidWeek, (new) business has been picking up some steam. Big mahalos to Alana and the rest of the team at MidWeek!
* Moved into my much cozier/spacious/convenient storage space at Hawaii Self Storage. Got a lot more elbow room now to fill up with additional inventory, fold clothes and fulfill orders l’dat! Mahalos to the friendly staff at HSS!
* VH07V will be sponsoring this year’s Rice Fest (duh!), but the even more exciting part is that in addition to having a booth there to sell VH07V merch galore, I will printing up the official Rice Fest shirts for this year which will be worn by all volunteers. Another version of the shirt will also be sold at the VH07V booth with part of the proceeds going back to our main beneficiary: Lanakila Meals on Wheels!
* May have another potential “giving back” type of project in the works, but I don’t really want to talk about that yet in case it doesn’t happen. More on that to come.
