Secret Recipes L’Dat!

August 30, 2010

Growing up with a mama with mad cooking skillz (and no written recipes), I was never really exposed to recipes and the art of putting them together. Now that I’m a bit older, I have a strange desire to be like Mike her and learn how to cook with my eyes closed.

But since I gotsta start somewhere, I’ve been going with tried and true recipes and then adding my own little touches to them. I think I’ve done a-ight with my own takes on Jambalaya, Furikake Salmon and my famous (in my own mind) homemade poke…

Ed's Homemade Poke
My Homemade Poke

… but I’m still in my cooking infancy. Let’s use this forum to share some of our favorite recipes with each other so we can all become better cooks together… or at least try! Hehe!

So we got the well-known, local miso chicken marinade recipe right? (1 cup miso, 1 cup shoyu, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup beer!). That’s always an easy/quick one.

And then we got the secret ones: Aunty Eunice’s Broccoli Salad, Johnny Mac’s Sriracha Flap Meat Marinade, RRRRich B’s wifey’s Peanut Butter Brownies, and Mama’s Recipe for a Happy Marriage… (Sorry, even if I may know some of them, I’ve been sworn to secrecy and will get murdered if I divulge anything, so please don’t make me tell you. LOL!)

But here’s one that turned out to be a pleasant surprise. We actually found this one on the back of a Chex cereal box and decided to try it. BRAH! Broke da mout’! Fo’ real! She go! No joke! (And I’m not really a sweets person…)

Chex Muddy Buddies
Prep Time:15 min
Start to Finish:15 min
Makes:18 servings (1/2 cup each)

Ingredients:
9 cups Rice Chexยฎ, Corn Chexยฎ or Chocolate Chexยฎ cereal (or combination)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Preparation Directions:

  1. Into large bowl, measure cereal; set aside.
  2. In 1-quart microwavable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on High 1 minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag.
  3. Add powdered sugar. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.

Substitution: Peanut butter and chocolate are a favorite flavor combo, but peanut butter lovers can substitute peanut butter chips for the chocolate chips to intensify that flavor.

Chance um and let me know how it goes.

Speaking of recipes… If you’ve got a winning rice related “riceipe”, feel free to submit it to our “Riceipe” Contest for consideration. Top 5 selected recipes will compete (Iron Chef style) at our Rice Fest event and the winner in each category (Amateur or Professional) will win $250 and have their recipe published in Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi’s forthcoming book from Watermark Publishing tentatively titled “The Hawaii Rice Cookbook” (scheduled to be released April 2011).

No fo-get! Help a brutha out. Share your favorite recipe in the comment area below k? And Cup-O-Noodle no count yeah! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Shooooooooooooooots! Happy Monday y’all!

What Ever Happened To…?

August 23, 2010

So the other week, my beloved blunt friend Todd tells me that my blog is boring these days and that I needed to spice things up. He misses how I used to post every day.

Granted posting Where In Hawaii every Wednesday has become somewhat repetitious, I had to remind him that to post that one blog a week, I still had to:

1) take the photo
2) edit the photo
3) collect and calculate the stats from the week before
4) write the blog
5) read each and every comment
6) reply to each and every comment
7) rinse and repeat

Oh, and did I mention that I wasn’t getting paid a penny for this, and that my new position at work (my real job) is owning me?

I wasn’t complaining really. I actually agreed that I should be blogging more, but I just had to let my friend know the dealio, real quick-like.

So here I be. Attempting to keep y’all troops entertained. ๐Ÿ˜‰ With Cat’s shocking announcement last week, it looks like there are less and less of us bloggers doing so dese days das why! :

What Ever Happened To…?
So in honor of Todd, who is single btw (*grin*), let’s do a “What Ever Happened To…” blog today about meeting people/places. The idea behind “What Ever Happened To…” is to let us take a trip down memory lane and take a look back at how things were back in the day. If this goes well, we can continue it with different topics. Today’s topic: Meeting People/Meeting Places.

When I was growing up, cruising Waiks was where it was at. We would go round and round and round on Kuhio Ave – for hours on end – in the hopes of talking to those hotties in da Honda. Some of my old older co-workers used to talk about this thing called socials where clubs/groups from one high school would go out with clubs/groups from another high school. I have no idea what that is, but the concept sounds ingenious! LOL! Anyway, in the comment area below, feel free to post your favorite place to meet people. Maybe even share the story of how/where you met your wife/husband/bf/gf? Lord knows, Todd needs the help. Ahahaha!

Are You Ready for Some (Fantasy) Football!?
On a side note, we’re starting up the WWE Fantasy Football League again. If you’re interested in playing with us, post your interest in the comment area below and I’ll send you the invite. Last year’s rankings:

1) kuya.d
2) BananaFysh
3) mypassionbucketisfull
4) Coconut Willy
5) che
6) bB
7) WWE
8 ) NeedaHobby
9) soogs
10) Stickit

Shooooooooooooooots! Happy Monday y’all!

Fun Day Monday: Memorization Tactics

July 26, 2010

Gooooooood morning yo! Yep, it’s Fun Day Monday and your boy is here to post once again. Two Mondays in a row now? Miracle ain’t it?

Well, there’s actually a good reason…

Aside from missing y’all very dearly this weekend (as, I’m sure you did me ๐Ÿ˜› ), my ugly mug is supposed to be donning the cover of today’s print edition of our wonderful Star Advertiser, bringing a whole new set of readers (well, hopefully) to WWE.

AURIIITE!

So here we be, with an oldie but goodie, Fun Day Monday blog. Dust off your keyboards and comment awayyyy kay!?

A while ago, our friend Rox shared her method of how she remembers her friends’ license plates… She takes the first three letters of the plate and makes a catchy phrase out of it. For example: RBP would be Ronie Brings Peanuts, GVT would be Good Virgin Teacher, and PJN would be PaJama Nighty. Ahahaha! Eh, no ack! I know you do the same! LOL!

And speaking of license plates, let’s not forget about kuya.d‘s now legendary suggestion of VH07V on a previous “Custom Plates” blog (see comment #12)! Huuuu, dat be some history right dea!

VH07V Vanity License Plate
VH07V Vanity License Plate

Anywho, let’s hear some of your memorization tactics. Can be with license plates or anything else. Maybe you can use Michael Scott’s tactics?

http://widget.nbc.com/videos/nbcshort_at.swf?CXNID=1000004.10045NXC&widID=4727a250e66f9723&clipID=994221&showID=22&configXML=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nbc.com%2Fservice%2Fvideowidget%2Fparams%2FdmlkZW9faWQ9OTk0MjIx%2F&initXML=http://www.nbc.com%2FThe_Office%2Fvideo%2Fepisodes%2Finit.xml?videoId=994221

On a side note, here’s a feel good mini-story: This past weekend, I flew over to Maui to help out at our Road Runner Mobile booth at the Maui Spam Jam. Amongst other things, we were giving away one brand new SpongeBob SquarePants skateboard every hour. There was a cute kid named Jarrett there who signed up early on to try and win one of the skateboards. Hour after hour, he would come back to our booth to see if we had drawn names yet and if the name we had drawn was his. He just would not give up.

As the show started to come to a close, we had one more name left to draw. Jarrett was nowhere to be found. We figured he had either given up or left. Either way, the show had to continue. Bruddah Joel (da man from the Maui’s division) was about to pull the last name, but instead of pulling it himself, he decided to let one of two young girls pull the name. They too had been hanging around the booth for most of the day hoping to win the skateboard.

In an unbelievable twist of fate, the girl pulled Jarrett’s entry!!! Joel and I were floored! Something was in the air… It had to be divine intervention!

Making things more fairytale-like, we found out from Jarrett’s mom that little Jarrett was actually recently hit by a car and has been going through months and months of rehab to get his walking back to form. On top of that he is also an avid collector of skateboards.

WOAH! Talk about chicken skin!

Here’s a shot of Jarrett with his new skateboard (along with Joel).

Jarrett and Joel
Jarrett and Joel

Congrats Jarrett! All the best to you!

K, so once you clear the tears from your eyes 8) , here’s the stuffs you can choose to comment about below if you like:

* What kind of memory tactics do you use?
* Creative words for the 3 letters in your license plate.
* Comments about the clip (above) from The Office.
* Comments about Jarrett or his story.
* Favorite things to do, places to eat, etc., in Maui.
* Comments about fate, and/or how things work out.
* How your weekend was.
* Randomness.
* How you, as a new reader, love me. ๐Ÿ˜›
* How you, as an old reader, missed me. ๐Ÿ˜‰
* Hijacking topics.
* Anyt’ing and erry-thing.

A-ight peeps. Have a great last week of July!

P.S. Was good to see bB (again) and meet his wife, and also meet NeedaHobby for the first time IRL! Thanks for coming out to the show! ๐Ÿ™‚

Fun Day Monday – Hidden Symbols in Logos

July 19, 2010

It’s been a while since we did a “Fun Day Monday” post, so I thought I’d shock y’all, and blog about this fun/interesting one forwarded recently amongst our marketing department. Pretty interesting stuff, especially for you marketing/art/graphic types.

An interesting bit of Logo trivia… I was not aware of these things…guess I’ll have to start watching logos more carefully.

Tostitos

Fun Day Monday - Hidden Symbols in Logos
Tostitos

If you look at the center of this logo, you can see two people enjoying a Tostitos chip with a bowl of salsa. This logo conveys an idea of people connecting with each other.

Formula 1

Fun Day Monday - Hidden Symbols in Logos
Formula 1

At first, this logo might not make much sense. But if you look closely, you’ll see the number 1 in the negative space between the F and the red stripes. I also love how this logo communicates a feeling of speed.

Milwaukee Brewers

Fun Day Monday - Hidden Symbols in Logos
Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers is a professional baseball team from Milwaukee , Wisconsin (well, duhโ€ฆ). Their logo is actually made up of the letters M (on top) and B (below the m). These two letters also form a baseball glove.

Northwest Airlines

Fun Day Monday - Hidden Symbols in Logos
Northwest Airlines

This simple looking logo actually carries a lot of information. First of all you can see the letters N and W, the first two letters of the brand name. But what most people don’t see is the compass that points to the Northwest, another reference to the brand name.

Amazon

Fun Day Monday - Hidden Symbols in Logos
Amazon

This logo doesn’t seem to hide much at first sight, but it gives you a little insight in the philosophy behind the brand. First of all, the yellow swoosh looks like a smile: Amazon wants to have the best customer satisfaction. The swoosh also connects the letters a and z, meaning that this store has everything from a to z.

Toblerone

Fun Day Monday - Hidden Symbols in Logos
Toblerone

Toblerone is a chocolate-company from Bern , Switzerland . Bern is sometimes called โ€˜The City Of Bears โ€™. They have incorporated this idea in the Toblerone logo, because if you look closely, you’ll see the silhouette of a bear.

Baskin Robins

Fun Day Monday - Hidden Symbols in Logos
Baskin Robins

The old logo of Baskin Robbins had the number 31 with an arc above it. The new logo took this idea to the next level. The pink parts of the BR still form the number 31, a reference to the 31 flavors.

Sony Vaio

Fun Day Monday - Hidden Symbols in Logos
Sony Vaio

Sony Vaio is a well known brand of laptops. But did you know that the name Vaio logo also had a hidden meaning? Well, the first two letters represent the basic analogue signal. The last two letters look like a 1 and 0, representing the digital signal.

FedEx

Fun Day Monday - Hidden Symbols in Logos
FedEx

Do you see any arrows on FedExโ€™s logo? I saw it a few times at other site saying that thereโ€™s an arrow hidden in the FedEx arrow, but I couldnโ€™t find it. I now know where it is, itโ€™s your turn to find. The clue is that the arrow is located in between the alphabet E and X, and the arrow is white, acting as a background.

Hehe, ok, so this one is not really part of the trivia, but I thought you guys might get a kick out of it. Cute huh? It’s the logo for an event I’m helping to coordinate called the Rice Fest. Food, Fun and Festivities for the entire Family. ๐Ÿ™‚ Come check it out this September 11th at Aloha Tower if you have some time! Have a great week gang! See you for Where In Hawaii Wednesday! ๐Ÿ™‚

Aloha and Welcome!

June 7, 2010

It was a little over a couple years ago that I found myself writing an introductory message much like this one and I gotsta tell ya, it feels a bit strange. Back then, I was introducing myself (and this blog) to the Honolulu Advertiser community, and today, I be hea, doing it all ova again.

I’m optimistic that some of you may be making your way over here from the WWE `Ohana we built on “that” side, and I’m also hoping that we can find new family members on “this” side.

Whatever the sitch, I’ll be sure to try and make this place as fun and as interactive as possible. We’ll start this Wednesday with an all-new “Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego” “Where In Hawaii Is Edward Sugimoto” photo guessing game.

Y’all ready for this!? ๐Ÿ™‚

Big Ups!
* To the University of Hawaii Wahine Softball team for taking us on a ride during their amazing season!
* Props also to the Men’s Baseball team who fell to ‘Zona yesterday.
* To the Celts for evening the series up with the Lake show. Rondo is becoming a big time playa no?
* To the former Honolulu Advertiser staffers for their hard work in the past.
* To the current Honolulu Star-Advertiser staffers for their hard work in the present.

Fun Day Monday – Pet Peeves

May 24, 2010

The other day, I saw some clown wearing his shades indoors. Mo’ worse, it was night time. *groan* I never understood this. Am I supposed to be impressed with their uber coolness or somethin’?

Now I know that there may be some – with serious eye issues – who have the need for darkened lenses, and I completely sympathize with them. The peeps I’m actually talking about are the “I’m-wearing-these-mack-daddy-shades-at-night-so-I-can-attempt-to-be-too-cool-for-school” type. Oh boy.

Now that we have an entire weekend under our belts, I thought this might be a good time to vent, ala kuya.d‘s “I’m So Over It” post. And yeah, I could’ve sworn we’ve done this “pet peeve” topic before, but the only one I could find was our traffic pet peeve post. So vent it all out. What are some of your biggest pet peeves?

Corey Hart – “Sunglasses at Night” (Chris Geo Trance Remix)

Hijack This!
* Excited for the new “Hawaii Five-O“?
* What is going on with Orlando dangit!!!??? Think it’s gonna be another Lakers-Celtics epic showdown?
* How ’bout dem Wahine softball players? They beat Texas Tech 7-1 in the Stanford Regional Championship game and are now going on to face top-ranked Alabama in next week’s NCAA Super Regionals! How awesome is that!? Goooo Wahine!
* Thoughts on Djou’s victory?
* When you have some time, please check out my new project: AndHere.com. In an attempt to illustrate and educate err-one about what Road Runner Mobile is and where you can use it, I’ve been going around town, taking photos and testing Road Runner Mobile speeds to post on the site. Starting today, local Twitter superstars Peter Kay, Melissa Chang and Russ Sumida will pitch in and tweet/blog their experiences with RR Mobile as well. Lemme know what you guys think! ๐Ÿ™‚

Fun Day Monday: Bootylicious

May 17, 2010

Last week, Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn (the hosts of G4TV’s “Attack of the Show”) featured a hilarious product called Booty Pop that I just HAD to bring up for us to chat about today. In case you don’t know whattheheck I’m talkin’ bout (Willis), checkit:

Booty Pop Commercial

Sheer hilarity yeah?

The first time I saw the commercial, I cracked up thinking it was a joke/parody. When I realized it was a fo-real kine product, it was even funnier! What do y’all think?

* Fellas:
– Are you a booty man?
– What would you do if you found out a girl you were dating used Booty Pop? Would you claim, as my friend would say “false advertisement!”? ๐Ÿ˜›
– Would you ever use it yourself?

* Ladies:
– Does this product interest you at all? Would you ever buy or use it?
– What would you do if you found out a guy you were dating used this!? Ewww yeah?
– Does a fella with a lil’ junk on his truck do it for ya? 8)

For more booty humor, check out this amusing video of a mom attempting to pop her booty! LOL!

P.S. Damn you Celtics!!!

Have a great week gang!

Fun Day Monday – Name That Band

May 10, 2010

So last week, a friend of mine posted something on his Facebook status that got me pretty excited. He said:

“What!?! Color Me Badd and Shai are coming to Honolulu?? Time to buss out the ol’ Z Cavaricci’s.”

I know, sounds kinda da kine to get excited over something like that, but sheez, that be some flashback memories right there (for a guy like me at least).

Color Me Badd – I Wanna Sex You Up

And when I say a “guy like me” I’m talkin’ about a:

* first-CD-I-ever-owned-was-C.M.B.
* grew-up-on-these-bands-and-used-to-make-“Love-Jams”-mixes-with-these-songs-to-impress-the-ladies…

* sang-in-groups-who-used-to-harmonize-(or-at-least-try!)-like-these-bands…

… kinda guy.

So yeah, as you can tell, I was a fan! Hearing that they will be reuniting and doing a show here in Hawaii is of particular interest.

Shai – If I Ever Fall In Love

I’m curious to know what bands excite you. We’re of varying ages, races and sexes up in hurr, so I’m sure we’ve all got our interesting tastes in music. (And yes, though it does sound familiar, we’ve never had this as a topic before (I think). I checked. Feel free to include your favorite fashion stylings of those times as well!

Holla!
* Who were some of your favorite bands growing up?
* What memories do you have of those times?

Fun Day Monday: You Know You’re NOT Local If…

April 26, 2010

A little over a year ago, we had an active discussion about how you can tell if someone is “local” or not. In fact, I believe it was the first time we hit triple digits (in comments) up in this heezy. In case you missed it, chicky chicky check it: You Know You’re Local If…

There were several moments this weekend when I saw peeps acting supah “non-local” and it made me want us to chat up about it this week. So let’s see what our WWE `Ohana can come up with ah?

You Know You’re NOT Local If…
(Need help? Click here or here.)

I’ll start:
* You wear matching aloha wear from head to toe (and think it looks cool).
