Flashback Friday: Finish This Song – March 20, 2009

March 20, 2009

Ho, da feedback for last week’s “Name That Tune” contest is still coming in as I write this (Tuesday), and it took on a life of its own over time. To accommodate the interest, let’s switch it up a bit this week and make it a finish that song game, ala Don’t Forget the Lyrics/The Singing Bee. I’ll start with the first line to the song, and the next person commenting will add the next line. Getum? Gotum? Good! We go!

I met a boy who didn’t know…

I know, I know… easy, but we gotta pick one that more peepo know right? 🙂

Talk to me!
* Post your comment with the next line to the song.
* Add any stories or memories you have when you hear this song.
* If you have any other comments about the song or performer, add those too k?

Happy Aloha and Flashback Friday y’all! Have an awesome weekend! Shoooooots!

Flashback Friday: Name That Tune – March 13, 2009

March 13, 2009

(*announcer’s voice*) And NOW!!! Introducing another game to add to our WWE’s Flashback Friday repertoire…

… *drumroll* …

Somebody stop me! Can we all tell who’s in marketing here? Ha!

OK, so hurr’s the idea. I’ll type in a snippet of lyrics from an old school song (most likely a local Hawaiian kine jam) and you try to guess what song it is and who sang/performed it. Include your memories of that time in your life for bonus points too. Eh, no cheat and Google da buggah k?

The lyric teaser and my personal memory is as follows. Take a guess as to what the song is and add your memories too k? Shoots!

Bend your back and your knees,
Stretch out your hands like a racing jockey

Hearing this song recently made me laugh and reminisce. It was back in high school when some of us basketball players caught a ride with our coach to a game. I think it was an interisland game in Kauai if I remember correctly. So this song: ________ by ________ came on the radio and our coach (the driver) blasted it and proceeded to actually do the jockey move dance while driving! We all cracked up and joined in with the jockey move with our coach and the music. Not necessarily the safest thing on earth, but it was hilarious!

Needless to say, we carried that energy over to our game where we wiped the floor with our opponents, showing them our jockey move. OK, so I don’t necessarily remember if we won 😛 , but it does make for a happier ending doesn’t it? 😉

What about you gang? Can you Name That Tuuuune (and artist) and share your memories of this time (early 90s)? Holla!

Happy Aloha and Flashback Friday y’all!

Flashback Friday: Lunch Money?

March 6, 2009

A-ightchall, judging from yesterday’s comment count, Top Chef (or sports or entertainment or tech or MMA news for that matter 😛 ) ain’t as popular here as we once thought. I know, I know. My own fault for posting super late kine, but I’m back in bidness now and that’s all the matters right? Right. 😉

So as promised, we’ll switch it up a bit today and do a little Flashback Friday action here. *cue Saturday Night Fever music*

This week, let’s chat about something near and dear to our hearts… Food!

Although this question may reveal to us your age, no be shame! The fun is in the sharing. So hurr’s this week’s Flashback Friday question:

How much was school (kine) lunch when you were growing up?

I don’t remember how much it was back in the elementary school daze (yes, my memory sucks!), but I do remember quite fondly that my high school lunch was Free Fifty Free! Awwww yeah! I was a school lunch “snack” server.

For those of you not in the knizzow, a snack server was just like a lunch server but our side always had the better food. The Sloppy Joe’s and the Nachos of the school lunch world. Represent! Errryone always wanted to eat on our side.

It was like the best gig in town… We got to leave 4th period 20 minutes early (to go to the cafeteria to set up), work with the dopest peeps (cool dudes & cute chicks), and on top of all that (I’m so-so remarkable-ble)… we got a FREE lunch (or two) for our time! Booyakasha! Sure, there were some who teased, but they just didn’t know what time it was. Being a snack/lunch server was man.

OK, back to the question. If I were one of dem poor souls who had to dish out some serious coinage for my lunch 8) it would’ve been a whoppin’ $0.45. Snack line was $0.35.

So how about all y’all? Got any fun lunch time stories to tell? And how much was your school lunch back in the day?

90s Is the New 80s

March 1, 2009

Dear 1980s, I would like to announce – here and now – that you are on borrowed time. With the peeps who can relate to you getting up in age (yea, I said it!), your 15 minutes of fame is almost up. ‘Twas fun while it lasted though yeah?

OK, so I’m not exactly non-80s. I was born somewhere in the 70s actually (zip your lip!) But, while the craze of the 80s was a bumpin’, I was still early in childhood development in elementary school. Other than breakdancing and the Atari game system, your boy can’t relate much to the other “popular” (and expensive) trends like the Members Only jacket, Jelly shoes, slap bracelets, big hair, anything Lycra or neon (or both), mostly because I didn’t have spending money (and, I was a male! 😛 ).

So really, I am a product of the 90s culture and fashion. Hear me roar! Hehe!

Did you know that the 90s brought us some of the following life-changing winners?:

* The first show in (contemporary) reality TV format
* Major advances in video game play
* The mobile phone explosion
* The first, publicly available HDTV
* And, oh, this little thing called the Internet

You’re welcome 80s lovers. Beats PONG* shmall kine don’t it? *grin*

However, on the flip side, I had absolutely nothing to do with the following 90s gems:

* Beverly Hills 90210
* NKOTB (New Kids On the Block for those of you not in the know)
* Vanilla Ice
* Milli Vanilli
* O.J. Simpson

Apologies 80s lovers. 😛

A-ight, that’s enough nonsense for one day. But before I let you go, leaving you wondering what the heck the point of this blog was, here’s an explanation:

This is actually a lil’ taste of a new game we’re gonna play up in hurr on Fridays called “Flashback Friday.” I’ll give y’all a topic from yesteryear (80s, 90s or otherwise), and we’ll discuss amongst ourselves (until we’re not so verklempt). Be sure to check in then (and every other day for that matter) to join in on the tantalizing discussions, ya hear?

Mahalos to all you new readers who found your way here via my ugly mug in today’s Sunday paper. Hopefully, you’ll be back. Mad props also to the regular WWE commenters and readers/lurkers. Shoots! Have a good Sunday and I’ll see y’all on the flip side! Payce.

* Yes, I know PONG actually came out in the 70s you history Nazis. 😛
