Where In Hawaii is hemajang? – March 24, 2010 [Guest Blog by hemajang]

This restaurant was on our regular rotation of places to eat with work buddies. Haven’t gone there for a while because the last time we went, the normally grouchy lady (I’m being kind here) was having a really bad day and service was horrific, she practically threw our plates on the table and was very rude when taking our order. She wasn’t there today but in a weird way, I kinda like her direct local manner. Food is very good but getting pricey and average portions. Haven’t tried it but heard their oxtail soup is good.

(Ed’s Note: No idea who last week’s winnah was for kako mochi’s Oregon game, but congrats whoevah you wuz! 😛 I’ll update thangs for next week Wednesday, aftah I return. hemmz was generous enough to provide 2 pict-chaz this week so I took the liberty of “flashing” the second image in there for your viewing pleasure 8) )

Otanjoubi Omedetou Gozaimasu Kurosawa-sama! [Guest Blog by skycastles]

March 23, 2010

A big mahalo goes out to Ed for letting this wannabe blog about movies the entire day and to the two readers of my humble movie blog who apparently twisted Ed’s arm to get me today’s spot in the line up. Much love!

Happy Birthday Kurosawa-sama! Today Akira Kurosawa, the prolific Japanese director, would have been 100 years old. I found this website, AK 100 Project, which celebrates his life and work. (You’ll need to run it through Google Translate though because it’s all in Japanese.)

It’s amazing to me that one person could produce so many significant movies in a lifetime. Like all good art, his films went on to affect his contemporaries and future generations. According to Wikipedia, Kurosawa’s films have influenced some of Hollywood’s greatest directors, such as Sidney Lumet, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola.

However, despite Kurosawa’s accomplishments, the role of Asians in cinema is still quite limited. In Hollywood, on-screen roles are extremely few and far between (unless, of course, the Asian person is playing the exotic beauty or martial arts expert). Behind the camera, it seems like Asians are pigeonholed into making high-flying action movies. In addition, most mainstream movie-goers aren’t familiar with the films coming out of Japan, China, Korea, India, Thailand, etc.

While I enjoyed Charlie’s Angels and Rush Hour as much as the next person, I’m more interested in seeing aspects of life from an Asian perspective with an Asian cast. The best representation that pops into my mind is The Joy Luck Club. Unlike Picture Bride or Memoirs of a Geisha, which are firmly established in a historical setting, The Joy Luck Club captures a modern life and all the assorted issues that go along with that from an Asian American viewpoint.

Do you know of any other films like this worth passing on to the World Wide Ed ohana? Who is your favorite Asian actor/actress? What do you think about Hollywood casting white actors in roles written for or based on Asians (aka “white washing”)? Examples of this are 21 (about the MIT students who used their math abilities to count cards in Vegas), the upcoming film The Last Airbender (Most of the cast is white, except for the villain who is played by Dev Patel. That right there is an entirely different issue altogether, where people of color are only cast as the bad guys. I won’t even get into that discussion.) and Dragonball Evolution (starring Justin Chatwick as Goku). Similarly, what do you think of Jake Gyllenhaal playing Prince Dastan in the upcoming Prince of Persia? Does casting always have to be about the bankability of an actor? What about the integrity of the script? When and how will Asians become viable options as leading men and women? Or have they already achieved this status but are just continually overlooked because of the politics of movie making?

The Hawaii Visitor’s Survival Guide – Written and Illustrated by YOU! The W.W. Ed Bloggers

When this blog hits the ether, Brutha Ed will have been playing tourist for a week in a foreign land. So his joy is my inspiration. Today, the question I pose to you is, “If WE could write a survival guide for our great state’s visitors, what would be in it?” Helpful hints to entertainment, dining, vocabulary, graphics/videos etc. Whatever your mind and heart would like to put. Myself? I would put a few rules.

My first rule was inspired by some house guests I had recently. This had been their first trip to the 50th and I should have forewarned them that, and I’m sure everyone will agree,

  1. All footwear comes off your feet at the front/back door and STAYS outside! Due in part to the Asian influences and ESPECIALLY for hygiene’s sake, local culture dictates that no shoes or slippers, which traversed the outside world, may grace the inside of the house of a local. Think about it. If your shoes, that went into a public bathroom, also walked the floors in your house where you kids roll around, don’t be surprised when they get lepto.
  2. BTW, they’re called SLIPPERS not flip flops. Flip flops could be misconstrued as a derogatory remark if said to the wrong Filipino woman from the west side of Oahu. *ahem* But I digress.
  3. Respect the signs! Please enjoy the beauty of our islands…safely. Railings and fences are in certain places for a reason. Signs are posted to warn you of dangers. If you get hurt or get into trouble because you made a conscious effort to disregard all the attempts to keep you out of harms way, please know that we will not allow you to sue us (the county, the state, the people of Hawaii).
  4. Out of respect to our host culture (Hawaiian Culture), DON’T take home the rocks! Believe us when we tell you that it’s not a rumor. There is no theory to test! Let lying rock lie….right where they are! To be safe, don’t even pick up any rocks. Just leave them be or…remember what happened to Peter Brady? Yeah, well, it can get much worse than that!
  5. Daily baths/showers are a MUST! In some cultures around the world, it’s OK but please be aware that enjoying our beautiful weather causes you to sweat! We got tradewinds but it can still get humid. Swimming at the beach does not count as a bath. Sweat mixed with coconut oil and/or sunscreen WILL make you ripe like a three-day old papaya! The male gender should take care to at least rinse the sand and salt off yourselves as, I’ve been told, that these elements can seriously irritate your scrotum.

So, my friends, what else would our Hawaii Visitor’s Survival Guide say? How would it look? What other things can we put in our book?
