Fun Day Monday: Getting Pulled Over

March 16, 2009

Here’s a funny one to start off your week. It was forwarded to me by one of my writers.

A police officer pulls over a speeding car. The officer says, “I clocked you at 80 miles per hour, sir.”

The driver says, “Gee, officer I had it on cruise control at 60, perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating.”

Not looking up from her knitting the wife says: “Now don’t be silly dear, you know that this car doesn’t have cruise control.”

As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife and growls, “Can’t you please keep your mouth shut for once?”

The wife smiles demurely and says, “You should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did.”

As the officer makes out the second ticket for the illegal radar detector unit, the man glowers at his wife and says through clenched teeth, “Dammit, woman, can’t you keep your mouth shut?”

The officer frowns and says, “And I notice that you’re not wearing your seat belt, sir. That’s an automatic $75 fine.”

The driver says, “Yeah, well, you see officer, I had it on, but took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket.”

The wife says, “Now, dear, you know very well that you didn’t have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you’re driving.”

And as the police officer is writing out the third ticket the driver turns to his wife and barks, “WHY DON’T YOU PLEASE SHUT UP??”

The officer looks over at the woman and asks, “Does your husband always talk to you this way, Ma’am?”

“Only when he’s been drinking” replied his wife.

Talk to me!
* Sound familiar? 😛
* Who do you think is right? Wrong?
* Would you have done what the wife did?
* If you were the husband, what would you have done?
* How would you have reacted if you were the officer?
* Hope your Monday is going better than this driver!

Happy Fun Day Monday y’all!

Flashback Friday: Name That Tune – March 13, 2009

March 13, 2009

(*announcer’s voice*) And NOW!!! Introducing another game to add to our WWE’s Flashback Friday repertoire…

… *drumroll* …

Somebody stop me! Can we all tell who’s in marketing here? Ha!

OK, so hurr’s the idea. I’ll type in a snippet of lyrics from an old school song (most likely a local Hawaiian kine jam) and you try to guess what song it is and who sang/performed it. Include your memories of that time in your life for bonus points too. Eh, no cheat and Google da buggah k?

The lyric teaser and my personal memory is as follows. Take a guess as to what the song is and add your memories too k? Shoots!

Bend your back and your knees,
Stretch out your hands like a racing jockey

Hearing this song recently made me laugh and reminisce. It was back in high school when some of us basketball players caught a ride with our coach to a game. I think it was an interisland game in Kauai if I remember correctly. So this song: ________ by ________ came on the radio and our coach (the driver) blasted it and proceeded to actually do the jockey move dance while driving! We all cracked up and joined in with the jockey move with our coach and the music. Not necessarily the safest thing on earth, but it was hilarious!

Needless to say, we carried that energy over to our game where we wiped the floor with our opponents, showing them our jockey move. OK, so I don’t necessarily remember if we won 😛 , but it does make for a happier ending doesn’t it? 😉

What about you gang? Can you Name That Tuuuune (and artist) and share your memories of this time (early 90s)? Holla!

Happy Aloha and Flashback Friday y’all!

Survey Thursday – High School Shout Out

March 12, 2009

* What high school you went?

On the radio they (used to?) have a thing called “High School Shout Out” where you could call in and rep your high school over the air. Let’s see if we can one-up em, using technology as our friend. Haha, nah! I figgah, like kuya.d said in a previous blog, the first thing we ask when we find out someone is from here is the question above. Why not do it hurr? We get to rep our alma matter while learning a little more about each other at the same time. Win-win. Include your grad year if you dare! 😉

(C’mon fellow Cougars! If you’re out thurr, don’t let me us down! 8) )

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – March 11, 2009

March 11, 2009

Like Sistah skycastles last week, Bruddah frankie earned his first WIH victory by correctly guessing Coffee or Tea last week. And, even though he went to Kalani, we’ll put his name on the list of winnahs anyway. I keed of course. 8)

This week’s photo is pretty easy I think. Pay close attention to the photo surroundings. Oops, I said too much-go! 😉

The Most Dangerous Cake Recipe

March 10, 2009

Last week, I was forwarded this interesting cake recipe from a co-worker and thought I’d share with the WWE `ohana. It’s not only quick and easy, but delicious too. A few days later, the same co-worker actually brought the ingredients to work to make it as a mid-day snack. Needless to say, a crowd – interested to see this magical recipe in action – formed and excited chatter ensued. I hope y’all can enjoy this one with family and friends too…

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
a small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high). The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

Your ultimate dessert is now ready to be devoured!!!!  EAT!!!  If you’re feeling slightly guilty this can be shared by 2…

And why is this “the most dangerous cake recipe” in the world?  Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

Fun Day Monday: Please Interview…?

March 9, 2009

Last week, y’all went off on the “You Know You’re Local If…” topic. Much love for that! You guys are da bomb! 🙂 It got me thinkin’ though. Thinkin’ that we may have something here with the interactive thang. This week, I’m gonna try a lil’ sumthin’ sumthin’ and, although it probably won’t get as much action as last week, it might just get us a-talkin’ again. (At the same time, it’ll help a brutha out with some ideas for future articles… 8) )

So several months ago, I interviewed local songbird Anuhea Jenkins, and this month, I recently wrapped one up with MMA fighter Jason “Mayhem” Miller. Yesterday, I got an email from my boy Justin Young (RE: our interview) so we’ve gots that one in the queue as well. I still really want to hook it up with BJ Penn (so if anyone has any connections, holla!), but, after getting real close, have been unsuccessful thus far. And… I may have one lined up with Colbie Caillat (*cross your fingers*) in the coming months. EXCITING!

I promise I’m getting to a point here… Hehe!

The point is, or rather, the question for this week’s Fun Day Monday is…

What (local) celebrity do you want me to interview?

* Who’s hot? Who’s interesting to you? Who do you want to know more about?
* AND/OR… If you’re a celebrity reading this or you can hook it up with one, holla atcho boy! 8)

I’ll start… BJ Penn and Colbie Caillat are next on my wishlist. You?

Flashback Friday: Lunch Money?

March 6, 2009

A-ightchall, judging from yesterday’s comment count, Top Chef (or sports or entertainment or tech or MMA news for that matter 😛 ) ain’t as popular here as we once thought. I know, I know. My own fault for posting super late kine, but I’m back in bidness now and that’s all the matters right? Right. 😉

So as promised, we’ll switch it up a bit today and do a little Flashback Friday action here. *cue Saturday Night Fever music*

This week, let’s chat about something near and dear to our hearts… Food!

Although this question may reveal to us your age, no be shame! The fun is in the sharing. So hurr’s this week’s Flashback Friday question:

How much was school (kine) lunch when you were growing up?

I don’t remember how much it was back in the elementary school daze (yes, my memory sucks!), but I do remember quite fondly that my high school lunch was Free Fifty Free! Awwww yeah! I was a school lunch “snack” server.

For those of you not in the knizzow, a snack server was just like a lunch server but our side always had the better food. The Sloppy Joe’s and the Nachos of the school lunch world. Represent! Errryone always wanted to eat on our side.

It was like the best gig in town… We got to leave 4th period 20 minutes early (to go to the cafeteria to set up), work with the dopest peeps (cool dudes & cute chicks), and on top of all that (I’m so-so remarkable-ble)… we got a FREE lunch (or two) for our time! Booyakasha! Sure, there were some who teased, but they just didn’t know what time it was. Being a snack/lunch server was man.

OK, back to the question. If I were one of dem poor souls who had to dish out some serious coinage for my lunch 8) it would’ve been a whoppin’ $0.45. Snack line was $0.35.

So how about all y’all? Got any fun lunch time stories to tell? And how much was your school lunch back in the day?

Top Chef…Go!

March 5, 2009

Sorry gangy. Been pretty slammed lately. Dis going be one quick one, but I promise to be back with a vengeance tomorrow.

Lots o’ stuffs going on in the world:

* NFL: Terrell Owens gets cut from the Cowboys (Ed’s notes: damn diva!)
* Entertainment: Chris Brown charged with 2 felonies (Ed’s notes: did you see Rihanna’s face!?)
* Entertainment: Much anticipated Watchmen movie coming out (Ed’s notes: can’t wait!)
* MMA: UFC 96 Jackson vs. Jardine happenin’ this Saturday (Ed’s notes: Gooooooooo Rampage!)
* Tech: Facebook mimics Twitter (Ed’s notes: interesting…)
* TV: Tonight, the American Idol judges will pick the final 3 to make the Top 12 of season 8 (Ed’s notes: I really want Anoop Desai, Matt Giraud, and Ricky Braddy, but I think Megan Corkrey will slip in there somehow)
* WWE: Had a pretty cool, laid-back interview yesterday with Jason “Mayhem” Miller (Ed’s notes: article coming soon!)

But most importantly, at least for you WWE peeps,

* TV: The Top Chef reunion show was last night! Haha!

Let’s talk about any of the above or…

“Top Chef…Go!”
(I told you I would do it leerz! 😛 )

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – March 4, 2009

March 4, 2009

Sistah skycastles got her name on the board for the first time (surprisingly) by correctly guessing California Pizza Kitchen last week. Shucks (but props) to zzzzzz for mentioning it in general conversation. 😛

This week’s photo is another one of dem “I hope they’re still there” shots. *blush* Haven’t been there in a while, but I think they’re still popular with the young folk. Post your guesses below yo!

And oh-by-the-way, the Top Chef reunion show is tonight! Thanks for the reminder tita leerz! Even if you haven’t been watching (like me), check it out, cause the WWE readers seem to be crazies of the show. There’ll be talk about it tomorrow fo’ sho. EATS! – Zen Shu

March 3, 2009

First of all, I’d like to send mad love to errryone who posted comments to yesterday’s “You Know You’re Local If…” blog. It garnered a world Honolulu Advertiser World Wide Ed record setting 100+ comments. First time evah! The record befo’ dat was a whoppin’ 42 (which was also a record at the time). You guys are da bes’! Appreciate.

Not sure when the next triple digit action goin’ be, but I can now die a happy man… Hehe!

OK, so this weekend we went to check out the (somewhat) new izakaya on Kapahulu called Zen Shu (opened back in November where the old Harpo’s Pizza used to be – across Rainbows). I wen’ rush to put the photos together so I could be the first bloggah to write about it up in hurr, but then my bubble was bursted (is that even a word?). I did a search and saw that aunty sistah Melissa already dropped some knowledge on all y’all. Das alright. I’ll present the updated, 2K9 version I guess.

Parking’s pretty much non-existent. Just gotta find um on Kapahulu or Kanaina if can.

The interior is off the hook! You can tell they’ve spent big bucks to bring the old Harpo’s look up to speed to the year 2000. 😛

The dining area is on the smaller side, as the other half the establishment is reserved for the sports bar type.

And then there was the EATS!

Seared Seafood Summer Rolls - Seared Hokkaido Scallop and Shrimp with Alii Mushroom and Sweet Aioli - $9
Seared Seafood Summer Rolls – Seared Hokkaido Scallop and Shrimp with Alii Mushroom and Sweet Aioli – $9

Probably one of our favorites of the night. Nice, rich, flavor.

Garlic Dusted Sake Scented Edamame - Sake Steamed Edamame (soybeans), Garlic Panko Dust - $4.50
Garlic Dusted Sake Scented Edamame – Sake Steamed Edamame (soybeans), Garlic Panko Dust – $4.50

Kinda bland, but ok to munch on while waiting for the rest of our grub to arrive.

Sake Dill Nage Manila Clams - 1 lb. Steamed Manila Clams in Sake Dill Nage - $16
Sake Dill Nage Manila Clams – 1 lb. Steamed Manila Clams in Sake Dill Nage – $16

These clams had an odd taste to them. Couldn’t put a finger on it.

Double Stuffed Portobello Mushroom - King Crab, Shrimp, Enoki, Shimegi, Shiitake Stuffed Portobello Mushroom - $12.75
Double Stuffed Portobello Mushroom – King Crab, Shrimp, Enoki, Shimegi, Shiitake Stuffed Portobello Mushroom – $12.75

One of the better choices of the night. Liked the little tease of tobiko.

Wok Fried Lemongrass Pork Chops - Wok Fried Thin Sliced Pork Chops - $12.50
Wok Fried Lemongrass Pork Chops – Wok Fried Thin Sliced Pork Chops – $12.50

Very unique. Never had pork chops prepared like this before. The flavor was really good, but kinda wished there were more “good” pieces and that they weren’t so burnt.

Steak & Eggs - Pulehu Ribeye, Ikura, Wakame Daikon Salad, Yuzu Soy Batablanc - $18
Steak & Eggs – Pulehu Ribeye, Ikura, Wakame Daikon Salad, Yuzu Soy Batablanc – $18

A let down. You would think it would be a winnah. Steak = good. Ikura = Good. Steak and Ikura… didn’t translate well for me.

Hamachi Zukepacho - Marinated Hamachi with Goma, Negi, and Roasted Nori - $12
Hamachi Zukepacho – Marinated Hamachi with Goma, Negi, and Roasted Nori – $12

Hard to ruin raw Hamachi. Was pretty good. Kinda wished they used flavored nori.

Ama Ama Ebi Ebi Apua`a Roll - Amaebi, Ebi Tempura and Shiso - $16.50
Ama Ama Ebi Ebi Apua`a Roll – Amaebi, Ebi Tempura and Shiso – $16.50

Liked the idea of ama ebi and ebi tempura together.

Overall, a decent dining experience. It’s hard because when I think Izakaya, I compare everything to the best one: Tokkuri-Tei. There really is NO competition. I like the ambience however and I like their concept of a sports bar on the side. I would probably come back for that, as well as try stuff from their sake collection. Their bathrooms were clean too, and for those who know me, that’s up there…
