Columnists’ Holiday Party at the Road Runner Music Hall

November 11, 2008

With a whoppin’ 7 comments on yesterday’s post (2 of which were mine!), I decided to postpone the oh so popular wedding related posts to next week (while I’m on vacation). That way, I won’t have to be in front of a computer when I cry my eyes out at the lack of comments. Haha! I keed. But seriously, let’s get back to some hard core postin’ shall we?

On Friday, we had our annual, holiday get-together with our hard workin’ AroundHawaii columnists. I always look forward to these, as I get to meet and see the faces of the eclectic bunch that I usually only communicate with via email throughout the year. This year, our attending experts, spanning such topics as surf (Sean & Lane Davey and Dean Luke), computing (Yasuo Ogawa and Kiman Wong), recipes (Liz Rizzo), golf (Danielle Tucker), real estate (Joe Segal), jewelry (Russell Oshita), finance (Jon Yamasato), local food (Grant Kawasaki), Las Vegas (Kimo Akane), style (Cathy Lee), parenting (Diane Ako), and travel (Claus Hansen), enjoyed the festivities at the Road Runner Music Hall, an amazing facility put together by the folks at Clear Channel Communications.

The prizes were compliments of Oceanic Time Warner Cable, the delicious food was catered both by Creations In Catering and the gang at Clear Channel Communications, and the entertainment was by a new group called Onward. The lead singer’s voice (Chad?) was pretty killah! Here are some scenes from the night (mahalo to Kiman Wong for the shots!)!

Best Man Blunder Video

November 10, 2008

With the day of the big dance quickly approaching, let’s give these wedding-related blog posts another shot now shall we? What the heck right? After I get hitched, blogging about weddings won’t make a lot of sense das why, so let’s get it all out of our systems now right?

And even though your comment counts (on wedding related posts) tell me to do otherwise, I’ve never been a man to lose hope. In fact, since I’ll be gone for like 3 weeks or so, let’s do the improbable and go all week with a wedding blog postin’ fiesta! Yeeeee haw!

Today, I’ve just GOTSTA start us off with a video my co-worker forwarded to me recently. It’s of a best man… ah, I won’t ruin it for ya. Just watch it and laugh in delight horror. (*hint* Watch it over and over and over. OMG! It gets funnier every single time!)

Alls I know is that my best man Kelvin bettah not do this to wifey! Hahaha! Nah, junior (if you’re reading this), I guess you have decent motor skills.

Happy Monday y’all! Show this not-single-for-long man (*gulp*) some love with some comments below willya! 😉

Fave Five Friday – Cars, Cars, Cars

November 7, 2008

It’s almost time for me to start thinking of replacing my loyal “LoveMobile”! Here are my Fave Five Six options. If you had your choice of any car in the world, what would make your fave five? Holla atcho boy below!

  1. Toyota FJ Cruiser – I like SUVs and I like retro looks, so this is right up my alley. Too bad, da buggah is so expensive and drinks gas like watah! If/when they come out with a hybrid one, that might be the one for me…
  2. Lexus RX400h – Since I’m getting older, maybe it’s time I get a more adult-like car, while saving the environment at the same time. The only problem is that I won’t feel as safe parking it when I go ball in the more ghetto fabulous neighborhoods.
  3. Lexus IS – Fancy, sporty, young, professional, sexy… You know… all the things I’m not. 😛
  4. Cadillac Escalade Hybrid – Probably unrealistic because of the pricetag, but it’s a cool looking SUV that’s Hybrid. What else do you need?
  5. Motorcycle (any) – The guy in me just wants one for kicks. I tried my friends one a few months ago and could not stop thinking about it since. Too bad the woman is banning me from getting one for now. Hopefully one day, I can convince her. *grin*
  6. Old School Jeep Wrangler fixer-upper – Probably not the smartest investment, but I’ve always had an interest in driving one of these as a fun, weekend car.

Post your list below a-ight? Happy Aloha Friday folks! Be safe and have a nice, fun weekend k? Shoots!

Survey Thursday – Favorite Shopping Center?

November 6, 2008

* Big or small, where is your favorite shopping center in Hawaii?

[What da heck is Survey Thursday?]

I gotta go wit Ala Mos, since it’s the biggest, has the most going on, and has the best chance fo people watch (or see somebody you know).

Last Week’s Results (Who are you voting for for President?)

  • Barack Obama: 6 (DA WINNAH!)
  • John McCain: 4

‘Twas hahd fo weed through and figgah out some of your votes, but I think that’s accurate. I guess the rest of America listened to us WWE readers and voted Obama eh? 😛

Where In Hawaii is Edward Sugimoto? – November 5, 2008

November 5, 2008

Looks like we’ve got ourselves another multi-week winnah in jr., after he correctly guessed Waiola’s for last week’s photo. He joins the growing list of WWE eagle eyes in HNL2LAS, M and Coconut Willy in the multiple win column. C’mon the rest of y’all! Geev um some rubs this week k!? 🙂

Male or Female?

November 4, 2008

Another one from the joke archives… Have a happy Tuesday yo!

You might not have known this, but a lot of non-living objects are actually either male or female.  Here are some examples:

FREEZER BAGS: They are male, because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them.
PHOTOCOPIERS: These are female, because once turned off; it takes a while to warm them up again. They are an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can also wreak havoc if you push the wrong buttons.
TIRES: Tires are male, because they go bald easily and are often over inflated
HOT AIR BALLOONS: Also a male object, because to get them to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under their butt.
SPONGES: These are female, because they are soft, squeezable and retain water.
WEB PAGES: Female, because they’re constantly being looked at and frequently getting hit on.
TRAINS: Definitely male, because they always use the same old lines for picking up people.
HOURGLASS TIMERS: Hourglass timers are female because, over time, all the weight shifts to the bottom.
HAMMERS: Male, because in the last 5000 years, they’ve hardly changed at all, and are occasionally handy to have around.
THE REMOTE CONTROL: Female. Ha! You probably thought it would be male, but consider this: It easily gives a man pleasure, he’d be lost without it, and while he doesn’t always know which buttons to push, he just keeps trying

Send this to all the women you care about.. .and to any men who appreciate a good laugh.

I know this one, by nature, will not garner many comments, but send some love below anyway and let me know that you’re still alive and reading… 😉

Wacky Weekend of Wonder

November 3, 2008

Friday was Halloween so I went to work dressed as a copper, see. Since I’m cheap (and too lazy to think of two different costumes), I also used the getup for when we went out that night, see. Throughout the day, people thought I was either Lt. Jim Dangle from Reno 911the Cop from the Village People, or just some sukebe cop, see.

Note to self (and others): don’t be a cop again! 😛

Then came Saturday, my day of bachelor-related festivities.

First, my old KHET buddies took me out to Dave & Buster’s for a pseudo “Last Days As a Single Guy” celebration. Much love y’all!

Then, the future brother-in-law and gang took me out for bachelor party #2. I wish I brought my camera with me on a night filled with beer, gun shooting, drunken karaoke, 16+ shots and a performer named “Strawberry,” (who looked eeringly similar to bruddah Derrick LOL!), but I was able to snap a few hangover shots from the back of BOL’s truck the next morning.

All in all a fun weekend. Thanks errone for helping me celebrate. Not sure how serious she was, but my friend Noreen mentioned something about Twittering my wedding… That would be interesting now wouldn’t it? LOL!

Talk to me!
* Lt. Dangle, Village People or just plain sukebe?
* What did you dress up as for Halloween?
* What did you do that night?
* Are you like me and use the same outfit for work and going out?
* Did anything special on Saturday night?
* Would you be the least bit interested in following a Twitter at my wedding?

Grand Opening for Posh Pet Store Today!

November 1, 2008

I always admire when people I know, take that bold step into entrepreneurial-ness and start their own bidness.

David Souza is one such guy.

A pet lover all his life, David takes it to the next level with his new pet store in Kapolei (organized like a house), fittingly called 55 Pawsh Place. They will be holding their grand opening celebration this weekend, starting today at 2PM with a Hawaii Dog Foundation adoption event.

Sunday’s events will start at 1PM and feature two free educational sessions, product samples, and prizes given away every hour. Snacks for pets and pet parents and various giveaways will round out the day.

Everyone will also enjoy 10% off all products (including food) throughout the entire weekend.

55 Pawsh Place is located in the Halekuai Shopping Center in Kapolei (anchored by Chevron and Starbucks and across the street from Safeway). Regular store hours are Monday through Friday from 10AM-7PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 10AM-5PM. For more information, call 674-2055 or check out these articles: 55 Pawsh Place Holds Grand Opening Celebration or Island Tails’ Blogger Leslie Kawamoto’s New store: 55 Pawsh Place .

Fro-Yo, Yo – Yogurtland Is Where It’s At

November 1, 2008

Back in June, my friend Shannon Facebooked me and said to check out this place on University called Yogurtland. Since I’m no longer a townie however, making it out to the University area is not as on-the-regular as before. I told Shannon (and myself) that I’d check it out when I had the time next time I’m out thurr.

Months passed, and I still hadn’t made my way out to them there parts. Another friend Reynold called and told me to check out this popular place called Yogurtland. Trying to “ack” like I was in-the-know, I asked him where’s he’s been and that I heard about it months ago and not to worry, I was going to check it out one of these days soon.

In the last few months, there have been several local reviews of Yogurtland, both online and in print. While I had the golden opportunity to “break” the news to the peeps of Hawaii, I sat on it, and today, in November, after at long last making it out there, I’m finally ready to jump on the fro-yo (frozen yogurt) bandwagon yo!

If you’re an old school University of Hawaii at Manoa alum, you’ll probably remember grabbing a burger before class at the old Burger King located on the corner of University and Metcalf (next to the Atherton Y building). If you’re a little more Nu Skool than me, you might recognize this area as the old Mos Burger or Volcano Joe’s.

Today’s students (and the community alike) identify this corner as the home of Yogurtland, the latest craze in self-serve frozen yogurt.

You know how at those buffet restaurants, you can’t wait to finish your meal so you can run to the yogurt machine and load it up with a jubilee of toppings? Well, take that concept, minus the all-you-can-eat-buffet part, and you’ve got Yogurtland.

At 39 cents an ounce, you can fill your cup with some 16 rotating, and some seasonal, flavors of nonfat yogurt, including such classics as vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, as well as some unique options in taro, green tea, pistachio, peanut butter, pumpkin, espresso and New York cheesecake. For those who crave some tangy fruit action, they also offer blueberry, banana, mango, peach tart and plain options. Health conscious peeps can choose from half a dozen “no-sugar added” flavors as well.

Then, it’s on to the toppings! Woah! They’ve got 33 different fresh fruit and topping options including strawberries, blackberries, peach, pineapple, kiwi, mango, watermelon, cantaloupe, pomegranate, etc., and dry options like nuts, granola, sprinkles, chocolate chips, various crushed candy bars (Oreos, M&Ms, Butterfingers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups), cereal bits (Coco Puffs, Fruit Loops, Fruity Pebbles), Gummi Bears, cheesecake bites and even mochi!

Countless topping choices

And we haven’t even come to the best part: the price!

No matter how much yogurt you squeeze into your cup, or how much you pack on the toppings, it’s just 39 cents per ounce. That’s up to 40% less expensive that some of the other fro-yo joints yo. With the way the economy is these days, it’s refreshing (like the pun? 😛 ) to be able to treat yourself to a luscious snack without having to break the bank.

Pretty ono looking eh? Go check them out, go check um, go! Tell ’em Ed (and Shannon and Reynold) sent ya… Yo! 😉
